I'm looking for help getting the menu and mail toolbars to stay visible. I can turn them back on, but that's hardly a viable long term solution, since it's my mother-in-law's computer. In the main window, the write, tag etc. keeps disappearing and in the write new email window the bar with the attachment button keeps disappearing as well. I can't for the life of me figure out what's happening, but I'm assuming Thunderbird somehow resets the appearance, perhaps when it auto updates.

Can anyone help? I'm going nuts having my mother-in-law on the phone every other day asking for help when it happens.

/Morten

Close TB, hold Shift (Option on Mac) when you launch TB (safe mode), check 'Reset toolbars and controls', then 'Make changes and restart'. Does that keep the layout permanent?

Thanks, I'll try that. I need to customize the toolbars though, or she'll get confused and click stuff she isn't supposed to. So maybe reset, save chances, restart in safe mode, make the changes, save the changes and send what happens? They're really isn't just a "don't mess with my layout, Thunderbird"-option? What if I turn off auto-updates, or delete some registry file? Thanks for the reply!

When you do the first reset, TB will have the default layout. After that, you can customize the toolbars and buttons, and the new layout should be maintained until you make changes. There's no registry file to consider, and turning off updates won't guarantee the layout doesn't become corrupted due to a crash or interference by 3rd-party 'cleaner' apps. But doing a reset and re-customizing is usually a simple process.
