My internet and computer are fast. Recently, with the latest versions, it is taking about 5 seconds before a website starts to appear. If I close the tab and go back to the website, it is almost instant.

What is ff doing that is taking it so long. Is it verifying the website or some such thing? How can I speed this up.

Chrome and Edge both load the sites instantly as well, so it's FF that is slow, but only on the first visit after launching FF.

Boot the computer in Windows Safe mode with network support to see if that has effect in case security software is causing problems.

Start Firefox in Safe Mode to check if one of the extensions ("3-bar" menu button or Tools -> Add-ons -> Extensions) or if hardware acceleration is causing the problem.

  • switch to the DEFAULT theme: "3-bar" menu button or Tools -> Add-ons -> Themes
  • do NOT click the "Refresh Firefox" button on the Safe Mode start window

The problem has been found. It's FF trying to phone home to mozilla dot org, which is prohibited on my router.

I set this some time ago to get it to stop nagging me about updating. I'm on 76.0.1 as a portable ff from portableapps dot com. So, I don't update through FF, but instead need to go to portableapps dot com to get updates. And with FF updating so often, the portable versions aren't ready immediately. That's why I blocked the website. Little did I know how much FF loves to talk to mozilla dot org. It causes floods of requests as seen in wireshark.

The first launch of each day is typically does the most "phone home" connections. Later in the day if Firefox is closed and re-opened there is less lag before it connects to any website the first time. Fewer connections like checking for a Firefox version update and for updated for Add-ons with the add-ons server. (And every Firefox installation has add-ons that were installed with the Firefox installation or via a version update which may not appear in the Add-ons Manager but will show on the Troubleshooting Information page inside Firefox reached thru the Help menu and under "Firefox Features").
