Whoever suggested this new "feature" should get slapped hard over the head. Useless and confusing, not to mention it is detrimental to user security.

Here's how to get your classic address bar back:

1) Type about:config in your address bar, and click on the button to confirm you know what you're doing; 2) Search for browser.urlbar.update1 and double-click to set to "false"; 3) Search for browser.urlbar.openViewOnFocus and double-click to set to "false"; 4) Close and restart Firefox; 5) Profit.

To clarify the difference:

• browser.urlbar.openViewOnFocus controls whether clicking in the address bar drops down a list of your Top Sites (the ones from the first row of the Firefox Home / new tab page)

• browser.urlbar.update1 is a temporary preference in Firefox 75 to control whether you have the new self-enlarging "megabar" design or the Firefox 74 bar design

Note that browser.urlbar.update1 is already gone in the current Nightly build 77.0a1 and there is also a bug to remove browser.urlbar.openViewOnFocus, so in a few months this workaround will be gone.

An alternative is to use code in userChrome.css.
