This has been annoying me for many months now and seems to be consistent across different versions of Firefox - i currently have 72.0.1 on 64 bit Windows 10. Every time Windows does an update my startup setting of 'restore previous session' gets cleared so that I start with a single home page. Additionally, my default search engine gets changed to Bing. Nothing else seems to get changed and everything works fine once I set the option back. Interest8ingly the I see the same happen to Internet Explorer (which I keep for use on a small selection of sites) Does anyone know how to stop these settings from getting reset all the time?

A Windows Update should only affect system files. You should ask your question here; https://support.microsoft.com

Back up and restore information in Firefox profiles.{web link} I use an add-on that makes backups of my user profile, Just In Case. Unfortunately, it is not compatible with the current Firefox.

Every now and then, open the profile folder and create a copy of the current profile as is to another location on your hard drive. This way you will have a backup.

If you do this each day, you will not lose much data. This should be done with Firefox Closed.

Note: In case you need to restore from these backups, you may need to overwrite old or corrupted files.

Thank you for the quick response Fred - much appreciated.

Have you actually seen this issue yourself by chance?

I did start with Windows support - and various Windows forums carry posts across a large range of time from people with similar issues. A popular issue is MS update resetting the default browser to Edge and the default search to Bing. Typically Microsoft claim that this will only occur in case of major updates - ie once every year or so - and in other cases no such changes are made. But windows users continue to see changes to default app settings happen at every minor Windows update. When they press the issue, MS goes strangely silent. I can see why MS would want to do this - to keep their products in use and to promote their own ad streams - even though it amounts to wilful harm to private property - but... I was hoping someone familiar with Firefox might have found a simple way around it :)

I'm familiar with taking a copy of my profile - I do this whenever I migrate operating systems and/or new hardware. Here I try to keep a folder of bookmarks containing my current tabs - that way I can reopen close to the last session if I lose all my tabs due to an update. The real killer is when say a friend sends me an email with a web link and there's been an unnoticed minor Windows update - when I open the link it opens in a new browser session and kills of the last one.

Maybe it's time to re-look at the addons that manage tabs - maybe I can automate the backup of tabs on a regular basis

I have never had my settings changed from a Windows update.

Go to the Mozilla Add-ons Web Page {web Link} (There’s a lot of good stuff here) and search for what you want.
