My old hard drive failed two weeks ago. My synced tabs were listed just a few minutes ago. Then I look over at the side panel and they are suddenly gone. I never got a chance to save them (there were a lot there and I didn't know they'd expire). Is there any back end way to retrieve them? Firefox really should hold them until you delete them manually.

That list is available using either:

"3-bar" menu button > Library > Synced Tabs

Library toolbar button > Synced Tabs

Sidebars button > Synced Tabs (list opens in the sidebar)

(menu bar) View > Sidebar > Synced Tabs (list opens in the sidebar)

I'm not aware of any other place to see the list, unfortunately.
