I was forced into updating FF over the weekend of 5-5-19. I lost all of my addons and settings. Then to add to the agony the updated version started to slow to a crawl. Then on Monday ver 66 was installed. Now the browser is so slow that I can't use it. Typing letters takes up to 30sec to display the letter I am typing. It's insane that Mozilla can reduce a perfectly good browser into a non-functioning browser. Does anyone know if there is going to be a fix for this or do I have to suffer with Chrome from now on? I need to actually do work on the computer not play with settings and fiddle with different suggestions to make it work. A browser should just -work-. I should have stuck with ver 28 which did work well.

https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/update-firefox-latest-version?cache=no Did you update Firefox to the latest version 66.0.4 May 5, 2019 Fixes add-on certificate issue. 66.0.5 May 7, 2019 Further improvements to re-enable web extensions

Start Firefox in Safe Mode {web link}

A small dialog should appear. Click Start In Safe Mode (not Refresh). Is the problem still there?

What was your Firefox version originally? A fix is being created for older versions.

However, Some versions of Quantum change how the data files are set up, so they are not backward compatible.

There is a way around this.

Fred, Thank you for your quick response. I have been updating FF regularly as updates occur, so whatever the last ver was before FF melted down, last weekend. I had not logged on the computer for a few days and when I opened FF 5-4-19 it was a mess. I had all kinds of errors about my addons, my theme was gone, plus other odd things. I spent several hours trying to find out what had happened. Someone suggested adding my account in a "FF study." That was supposed to fix my problems. But then later, FF wanted to "update" my version, apparently this was supposed to be the overnight fix to all the problems. I clicked yes and then I discovered that it had installed a new FF installation, not just a version update, and that all the plugins, settings and addons I had before were ALL missing. So I could not check for updates for them. I spent quite a while trying to rebuild how I had originally FF set up and finally gave up. Then the next day FF installed a new update and then another update occurred later. I have no idea what update version I should have today 5-9-19, 66.0.5 is what I am on. But from that new FF installation onward all my speed problems, both with the browser lagging and hanging up and extreme difficulty inputting via the keyboard started. I've had to switch over to Chrome multiple times so I can actually use a working browser. If you have any information about why FF is failing like this I would appreciate that.

Let’s do a full clean re-install;

Note: Firefox comes in three or more folders on all computers. They are;

Maintenance: (Programs Folder) <Windows Only> Firefox itself: (Programs Folder) And two folders in the profile of each user on the computer for each Firefox profile for that user.

If you remove the Firefox folder, the user profiles would not be affected.

Download Firefox For All languages And Systems {web link}

Save the file. Then Close Firefox.

Using your file browser, open the Programs Folder on your computer.

Windows: C:\Program Files C:\Program Files (x86) Note: Check Both Folders

Mac: Open the "Applications" folder. https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/how-download-and-install-firefox-mac

Linux: Check your user manual. If you installed Firefox with the distro-based package manager, you should use the same way to uninstall it. See Install Firefox on Linux; https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/install-firefox-linux

If you downloaded and installed the binary package from the Firefox download page, simply remove the folder Firefox in your home directory. http://www.mozilla.org/firefox#desktop ++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ Look for, and remove any Mozilla or Firefox program folders. Do not remove the Mozilla Thunderbird folder if there is one.

Do Not remove any profile folders.

After rebooting the computer, run a registry scanner if you have one. Then run the installer. +++++++++++++++++++++++++++ If there is a problem, start your Computer in safe mode and try again.

Thank you Fred for the quick response.

I don't have time to do all this stuff for many days, it seems extraordinarily complicated and is going to take hours to accomplish. I'll just switch to Chrome and come back to FF when they have stabilized the browser.

It is possible that your firewall or other security software blocks or restricts Firefox without informing you, possibly after detecting changes (update) to the Firefox application. Remove all rules for Firefox from the permissions list in the firewall and let your firewall ask again for permission to get full, unrestricted, access for Firefox and the plugin-container process and the updater process.
