Is there a way to fix the bookmarks in V62? They don't move properly when you try making it hard to arrange folders, etc..

I was previously on v. 57 I think. I upgraded to v. 62 and now the bookmarks don't work properly. If I try to rearrange them, they won't always move where I want them to. For instance, I have a folder and I want to move it two folder lower. I'll try to move it, and it'll stay right there. If I move the folder 8 spaces lower, then it'll move down one or two spaces. The same thing happens when I make separators, everything. Sometimes if I'm moving something from a lower position to a higher one it'll work correctly, sometimes. Moving from a higher position to lower seems to not work almost all of the time.

Okay, I just tried it again and it seems to be working for now. For the past two to three days it hasn't so I'll still post this to see if anyone has any help for if it starts up again.

Hi, suggest making a backup just in case and Copy/Paste about:support to the Address Bar and Enter. All the way down to Permissions then click on Verify Integrity.

Are you doing this in the Bookmarks Manager (Library) or elsewhere (sidebar or in a menu drop-down list)?

Does using Cut & Paste work?

I definitely make bookmark backups, thanks. Here's what I get from the integrity check

I was doing it from the sidebar mostly and then checking from the library as well once I saw the sidebar acting funky. Both places would act funky in the same way, but not consistently. From the sidebar, I might have to move a folder down 8 spots for it to actually move down 2. In the library I would move it down 2 spots and it would move up 3 or something weird like that. It was crazy. It's totally working fine today from what I can tell so it's really strange, I haven't done anything differently from when it was happening to now. I'm fairly computer literate, I can put them together myself, etc...so it's not something like not knowing I had the view sort by alphabet or something noobie like that, lol. It seems to have corrected itself but I'll keep an eye out and come back if it reappears.

You can try to disable hardware acceleration in Firefox.

Close and restart Firefox after modifying the setting for changes to take effect.

You can check if there is an update for your graphics display driver and check for hardware acceleration related issues.

I already had the hardware acceleration off. It looks like the problem is back again today. In the screenshot, the left side is the library view of the bookmarks. On the right side is the firefox window sidebar of the bookmarks. You can see how they're not the same now. So annoying

Here's a few tips based upon my experiences with rearranging bookmarks and folders of bookmarks.

  • Slow and easy to let Firefox get the changes settled in the Places database. I never fail to be amazed about how something that seems so simple to take as long as it seems to take. Move too many too fast and you risk losing bookmarks which happened to me early on after "Places" was instituted all the way back in Firefox 3.0. No problems once I realized to go slow.
  • With Win 7 - 64-bit I would hope that PC has at least 4GB of RAM; less RAM could be an issue. More is better if you have it, 6GB or 8GB is about the max I that "standard" out of the box that I have heard of with Win 7 without a custom build option / configuration.
  • The trick I use to keep track of how quickly Firefox accepts the changes I make with bookmarks is to open the Windows Task Manager and minimize the Task Manager; the CPU meter will appear in the lower-right corner of the screen in the System Tray. I watch that CPU meter and when it "pegs" I stop moving bookmarks around and wait until that meter drops down and goes from light-green back to mostly dark-green. Don't "push" Firefox too hard, it just takes longer to accomplish your goals; it did until I figured that out.

But this situation seems to have improved quite a bit in Firefox, and I typically use the same PC for 6 to 8 years before building a new one using "last years" versions of the components in middle range specs, to take advantage of "clearance prices" or to get well vetted components that are on a v2, v3, v4 build version after they have been "fixed" from the earlier versions and might have more up-to-date BIOS versions (software that is in the hardware and needs to be "flashed") - but I do look for newer BIOS versions once I get the new PC assembled and running before I install too many applications.

There's something wonky going on, the issue is back. I'm familiar with waiting for actions to update since I have some pretty full folders, but my computer is very powerful, spec'ed for cad and 3D work, it's very responsive. This issue just started with the new firefox upgrade. It's responding just as fast as normally, just not accurately. Something as simple as moving a separator isn't working consistently. I just tried moving it down one space, it goes down four. Then I'll undo, and it'll move up 10. I'm just going to try to go back to the last version I had that was working correctly.

Actually, I'll try using the latest ESR version. Thanks for all of the help

Okay, going to the ESR v60 did the trick, everything is working like normal again. I think I'll just stick with the ESR's from now on.

Hi, do you happen to use livemarks (rss feeds as bookmarks) at all, and if so are you likely to have made copies of them?

Nope, never used rss feeds. Luckily I do make a habit of making backups of my bookmarks every few months or so. I didn't lose any bookmarks, they just wouldn't stay positioned how I placed them.

Once I downgraded to the ESR version, everything worked out fine (besides having to reinstall all of my add-ons and prefs for them)
