I use Firefox. I'm having a huge problem getting the computer to recognize my (correct) passwords at a number of different sites.

Is this a Firefox problem or do I look somewhere else? Thanks.

Do you mean Firefox doesn't recognize that there is a login form on some sites, or Firefox fills the wrong password on those sites?

Also, your Firefox identified itself to the forum as version 47. As you may know, the current versions of Firefox are:

An update is due out later this week.

If something is holding you back from upgrading Firefox, please let us know so we can suggest solutions or workarounds. Version 47 is not secure, and not supported.

What I mean is that when I type my login and password at a number of different sites, I get messages saying the password or login doesn't match what's on file and I am prevented from getting into my accounts.

I had NO idea my Firefox was so out of date! Thank you! Maybe that would solve the password problem??

To verify your current version, in case your Firefox mis-identified itself:

Open the Troubleshooting Information page using either

  • "3-bar" menu button > "?" Help > Troubleshooting Information
  • (menu bar) Help > Troubleshooting Information
  • type or paste about:support in the address bar and press Enter

In the first table on the page, the full version number should be indicated.

If sites say the saved password is wrong, you may need to edit or remove those logins. The organization of the Options/Preferences page has changed in recent versions, so this may not match up with what you see:

You can check your password here:

  • Windows: "3-bar" menu button (or Tools menu) > Options
  • Mac: "3-bar" menu button (or Firefox menu) > Preferences
  • Linux: "3-bar" menu button (or Edit menu) > Preferences
  • Any system: type or paste about:preferences into the address bar and press Enter/Return to load it

In the left column, click "Privacy & Security".

Then on the right side, click the "Saved Logins" button. Then click the "Show Passwords" button to add the Password column. You can correct a password by double-clicking it.

Note that Firefox 62 has been released in the meantime.

We have seen cases where updating Firefox isn't working and if this happens then best is to download the full version and trash the currently installed Firefox application to do a clean reinstall.

Download a new copy of the Firefox application and save the Disk Image file to the desktop Firefox 62.0:

Your personal data like bookmarks is stored in the Firefox profile folder, so you won't lose personal data when you reinstall or update Firefox, but make sure NOT to remove personal data when you uninstall Firefox as that will remove all Firefox profile folders and you lose your personal data.
