Firefox can't update to the latest version without a new installation.

Posted

For the last couple of updates I have repeatedly had an issue where my browser is unable to update without a manual re installation on my end. I have probably done this for the last 3 updates and am getting pretty tired of it. Is there any known solution for this issue or any other reported case of it at the very least?

Hi, please give this a try :

Certain Firefox problems can be solved by performing a Clean reinstall. This means you remove your Firefox program files and then reinstall Firefox. This process does not remove your Firefox profile data (such as bookmarks and passwords), since that information is stored in a different location.

To do a clean reinstall of Firefox, please follow these steps: Note: You might want to print these steps or view them in another browser.

  1. Download the latest Desktop version of Firefox from this page) and save the setup file to your computer.
  2. After the download finishes, close all Firefox windows (or open the Firefox menu New Fx Menu and click the close button Close 29 ).
  3. Delete the Firefox installation folder, which is located in one of these locations, by default:
    • Windows:
      • C:\Program Files\Mozilla Firefox
      • C:\Program Files (x86)\Mozilla Firefox
    • Mac: Delete Firefox from the Applications folder.
    • Linux: If you installed Firefox with the distro-based package manager, you should use the same way to uninstall it - see Install Firefox on Linux. If you downloaded and installed the binary package from the Firefox download page, simply remove the folder firefox in your home directory.
  4. Now, go ahead and reinstall Firefox:
    1. Double-click the downloaded installation file and go through the steps of the installation wizard.
    2. Once the wizard is finished, choose to directly open Firefox after clicking the Finish button.

More information about reinstalling Firefox can be found here.

WARNING: Do not use a third party uninstaller as part of this process. Doing so could permanently delete your Firefox profile data, including but not limited to, extensions, cache, cookies, bookmarks, personal settings and saved passwords. These cannot be easily recovered unless they have been backed up to an external device! See Back up and restore information in Firefox profiles.

Please report back to say if this helped you!

Thank you.

After reinstalling firefox I am on the correct version and things seem fine. I won't be able to verify if this actually solved my issue until a new version of firefox is rolled out, but in previous attempts I did not delete folders on my C:\ drive so I am hopeful that this is my solution.

Ok, good luck with it as I have also had the same problem before. The full version Installer seems to work for the issue. Seamonkey am still trying.

Boot the computer in Windows Safe mode with network support to see if that has effect in case security software is causing problems.

You can try a test with Firefox 60.0

Sorry for the delayed response. I missed the update that mentioned I could use firefox 60.0. In any case booting to safe mode with networking did allow me to update without a reinstallation. You mentioned security software, so I thought I'd mention the only security software I am running is windows defender.

Hi glad your fixed, did you get updated to 60.0.1 and now yesterday's 60.0.2 ???

If not please do the what I suggested. I have had the issue myself and the full version installer fixes the issue.

Flash Player Version: 30.0.0.113 Current Version ( emergency patch ) https://get.adobe.com/flashplayer/otherversions/

To be clear, I still have the issue I just didn't realize it until I got the most recent update. When I booted to recovery mode I was able to update without a fresh install, but when I rebooted I rolled back to 60.0 and I still get the message that I need to reinstall in order to update. I will try the flash update and see if that makes a difference.

Just a quick summary of events because it has been a while since I updated.

  • I made this thread on 5/17/18 asking for help when I ran into an issue several updates in a row where I couldn't update firefox without a completely new install.
  • I did a "clean reinstall" of firefox by deleting my C:\Program Files\Mozilla Firefox folder entirely and installing firefox again.
  • I stopped updating because the version I updated to happened to be the latest version and I didn't see the link with an installer for an older version of firefox
  • Today I receive a notification that a new version of firefox is available and I need to reinstall to use it (still can't just restart and get the update)
  • I try the method mentioned by cor-el and am able to update firefox while in safe mode with networking
  • After I reboot into normal mode I roll my install back to 60.0 to see if the issue continues and learn that it still does.
  • I updated my Adobe Flash after seeing it mentioned in your post and it doesn't solve the issue (although I am not sure you were saying it was a solution to begin with)

So at this point I have learned that if I boot into safe mode I am able to update, but doing a fresh install does not make a difference and I still have the issue.

Next time do not do the uninstall when there is a new update just install over top using a full version installer : https://www.mozilla.org/firefox/all/

That is correct. I have had the problem before myself as noted and it took me 3x's installing over top before it finally updated and installed on it's own.

Okay so I have installed over my files with one of the installers you linked above and am currently running 60.0.2. We will have to see if it works long term. All my files and settings seem fine so that is good at least.
