Doesn't seem to work—I hit the star icon, select the folder of my choice in the drop down menu, but the bookmark still ends up in Other Bookmarks and/or Recently Bookmarked! It used to be so easy …

Hi, (not a Mac user, so hope this is the same). When you click on the star, the bookmark, by default, will go into Other Bookmarks (prior to v48 known as Unsorted Bookmarks); however if you wish it to go to a different destination, keep your mouse pointer over the dialog box to prevent it from disappearing, then use the upper, downward pointing arrow on the far right, to select a destination > Done.

Read the instructions on the download page. You need to open Options for that extension and then use Select where new bookmarks will be added: and select the folder you want.

Yesterday it worked, today it doesn't … keeps putting everything into Recently Bookmarked again!

Maybe I didn't explain it properly—I have a number of different bookmark folders, for instance in my Music folder I have subfolders by country. I just want to bookmark a site directly into one of those subfolders rather than having to jump through hoops dragging them from one folder to another.

How come your suggestion worked yesterday and not today? Very frustrated, do not want to go back to Chrome because of all the spam …

When you have clicked the downward pointing arrow on the far right of the bookmarking dialog (as I detailed above); if you have sub folders, you should see a tiny arrow to the left of the main folder, which if clicked on, will reveal the sub folder(s) which you can then select to add a bookmark.

If it isn't working, you can hold down the Option key when you start Firefox to start in Safe Mode. More - Diagnose Firefox issues using Troubleshoot Mode.

If it works in Safe Mode, disable any theme or extensions you have - 3-bar menu > Add-ons > Themes/Extensions and restart Firefox; then if it's OK, re-enable them one by one until you find the culprit. You may need to restart Firefox after enabling some extensions.

Failing that, open the 3-bar menu > Help > Troubleshooting Information, then near the bottom look for Places Database and click on Verify Integrity, then restart Firefox - Use the Troubleshooting Information page to help fix Firefox issues.

Note that "Recently Bookmarked" is a so called smart folder that shows a list of recently created bookmarks that are all stored in their own folder.

If they aren't in the "other bookmarks" folder then they are in another folder if you use the Default Bookmark Folder extension. You can open the bookmarked link in a tab and click the highlighted star to open the edit this bookmark dialog. Click the arrow at the far right end of the Folder line to see in which folder the bookmark is located (drag the scroll bar until you see the highlighted folder).

Maybe I'm not explaining myself clearly? (Using FF59.02 in Mac OS El Capitan (10.11.06) on early 2008 Mac Pro …)

On my Bookmarks Toolbar, I have a folder named "Music"—inside that folder I have a number of folders such as "Logic", "Gear", "Brazil", "Cuba", "Loops", etc., etc. Say I want to bookmark a Cuban YouTube video and put it in my "Cuba" subfolder—I do everything you guys so helpfully suggest (thanks, by the way) and yet the bookmark still ends up in Recently Bookmarked …

It used to be that if I wanted to find something I had bookmarked a year or two ago, I simply had to look in the relevant subfolder—the old stuff is still where I put it, but any new bookmarks I just can't get to go in the correct subfolder. Grrr!

Is there no way of disabling the Recent Bookmarks folder?

Bookmarks SHOULD appear in Recently Bookmarked - as well as your chosen destination - such as a bookmarks toolbar folder/sub folder.

To place a bookmark in a bookmarks toolbar folder; after clicking the star and the far right arrow, select Bookmarks Toolbar and click on it to see your folders/sub folders. (Don't forget to click Done to save).

Are you saying that they ONLY appear in Recently Bookmarked? If that's the case, you may have a corrupt places.sqlite file in your Profile. For that, and other things to check, please see - Can't add, change or save bookmarks - How to fix.

IF you want to try removing Recently Bookmarked; Type about:config into the address bar, press Enter, accept the warning, scroll down the alphabetical list to browser.bookmarks.showRecentlyBookmarked and double click on it to change 'Value' from True to False, then restart Firefox. (You can re-enable it by double clicking the entry again).

Ah hah! Maybe that's the problem, will check it out ... Thanks for your patience with a FF neophyte.

Also, FYI, there's an optional bookmarks menu button () that looks like the old bookmarks menu button (the "right-half" of the inseparable star+book duo).

To add that button, either:

(A) Use the Customize panel (Customize Firefox controls, buttons and toolbars) to drag the icon to the desired spot on the toolbar

(B) Use the method from Bookmarks in Firefox - section entitled: How do I add the Bookmarks Menu button to the toolbar?

• Click the "Library" button:
• Click "Bookmarks"
• Click "Bookmarking Tools"
• Click "Add Bookmarks Menu to Toolbar"

It appears to have been the places.sqlite file. Incidentally, the instructions for finding that are given for windows, so I had to do some hunting and pecking and second guessing to get to it in Mac OS ... Okay, I'll cross my fingers and hope this is a stable fix.
