I cannot access my emails after gmail alert on my account.

I am having a problem accessing my emails on my gmail account following a security alert. I get the following message:- Sending of password for user julie.perry9901@gmail.com did not succeed. Mail server pop.gmail.com responded: Web login required: https://support.google.com/mail/answer/78754

I went into my account via the google website no problem whatsoever and dealt with the issues raised and then went back to Thunderbird having turned my computer off and on again. I still get the same message. When I go into the account settings everything seems okay and nothing seems to have changed. After several attempts I went in to see what passwords were being used on my Thunderbird account for gmail. There are non listed as if the account doesn't exist, and yet it is in account settings. I went back into gmail website and changed my password and went back into Thunderbird and still it doesn't work and constantly comes up with the same message. I have done absolutely nothing to the account in Thunderbird or Google and yet I am having serous trouble accessing my emails. It has been config-ed properly since I have had this laptop so why now has it suddenly started to throw its toys out the pram all of a sudden? I went into settings in Google and Enable POP for all mail (even mail that's already been downloaded) was not ticked. Could this be the problem? I still don't understand why there are no passwords for this account when all my other email providers are listed correctly. I have done absolutely nothing to any of the accounts. The only thing is I have had a security alert from Google about the account and this morning my lap top came back after being fixed. Any help would be appreciated. I have never had any problems with any of my accounts before. I have tried some of the suggestions as listed with other people with a similar problem but I am getting nowhere and I am not very computer literate. Thank you.

You may not have told Thunderbird to remember the password for your Gmail account.

The only thing is I have had a security alert from Google about the account

What was the alert about?

this morning my lap top came back after being fixed.

What needing fixing?

Makes sure you do 'allow less secure apps' for your Google account. https://support.google.com/accounts/answer/6009563

Firstly I can access my gmail accouont on my phone no problem.

My laptop has had a new cable fitted as the screen flickered and went off when I opened it completely. It is now functioning properly.

The google alert was someone had accessed my account on a device that wasn't recognized. It was me on my laptop. I have changed my password on my account and assured google that everything is alright and still I cannot access my account on thunderbird. I have changed my password and still I cannot access thunderbird. I have not changed any of the settings. I have never had any problems with thunderbird before. Normally I just go back in and everything is okay.

My guess is you are using POP mail in Thunderbird and have disabled it by turning off less secure apps in the Google security review (like they suggest without compunction or explanation)

This should be ON to use POP https://myaccount.google.com/lesssecureapps

HI, I put the question up, but none of the answers were any help. I have no idea how to handle the goodle security apps. I find the stuff is getting more and more complicated.

As the other person indicated, it has to do with Moxilla thunderbird, as the account works fine on my Ipad. I have been through all the settings. no joy. I changed the password as asked by google, but it seems thunderbird did not pick it up. Is there no refresh button anywhere? I get a error for password, than error for IMAP settings. Also seems the account is not on the list of saved passwords and usernames in tools, options, saved.... how do I get it back onto it???? would be grateful for sensible suggestions thanks Rose

Less secure apps was turned of, but not by me. In the meantime it was suggested that I create another account using pop and getting rid of imap as my google account seemed to have decided to use that instead of pop3, Once I set it up I was told to delete the other account, which I have done as my emails on my server will trickle back in. My new account has now got all my sent emails in the in box and some in, emails in the in box. What a mess. There is nothing in my sent folder whatsoever.. Does it ever end? I have spent so much time on this and now my account is all over the place. I have never had so much trouble with an account. You couldn't make it up, and now it is far from satisfactory, but at least I can now send emails and receive them, but what a mess!!! My emails are now coming through.

Thank you Matt for your help
