How to import bookmarks from Old Firefox data. Nothing I have tried works.

more options

I had to restore Windows on my computer and reinstall all of my programs. I need to import all of my bookmarks from the Old Firefox Data folder, and have tried everything that has been suggested online, and nothing has worked. I really hope someone has a solution. Thanks!

I'm not getting any error messages. I'm not a huge techie, so I may be better off to just take my computer back to the tech shop where they did my windows reload. I'm spending so much time on this issue, it would be worth it to have it taken care of by professionals. Thanks for your suggestions.

No standard definition or what " everything that has been suggested online" consists of.

Specifically, what have you tried?

Good question. I have tried the easy Import Bookmarks from the Firefox homepage. The only options are to import from a different browser. I have tried to copy the old profile folder to the new one. I have updated my computer previously and the bookmarks were easy to import. That is not the case this time.

This should help you. https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/recovering-important-data-from-an-old-profile#w_copying-files-between-profile-folders

You need to copy the places.sqlite file from the Old Firefox Data into the new Profile folder (while Firefox is closed) and replace the existing "new" places.sqlite file that was created after that Windows restore.

I wish I could say that this worked but it didn't. I copied the old places.sqlite file and replaced the new one in my new profile, then restarted my computer. Sadly the bookmarks are still not in the new Firefox.

Perhaps your bookmarks weren't even in that places.sqlite file in the Old Firefox Data folder.

The Old Firefox Data folder appears on the desktop as a part of the Refresh feature that a user can do to Firefox; and not a part of a Windows restore operation. Maybe the Refresh was done after the Windows restore operation and your bookmarks were already gone.

Discussed often around here that restoring Windows to an earlier date may "dump" Firefox data due to Windows only doing "save points" for Microsoft applications user data. Not sure if user data for other applications can be included in the "save point" or not; never been a Windows feature that I have ever used, not have I been interested in using. I keep my user data on a separate hard drive, including most of my many Firefox Profiles & data.

Sorry, for you loss. That's all I can think of now.

I don't even know what to say. I guess I'll bring my computer back to the tech company that did the Windows reinstall. Thanks so much for trying to help.

I just quit FF and went to Vivaldi, same problems plus too may others and no extension replacements.

My gestures and spell checker are part of Vivaldi, no hassles.

Much much simpler and it just works.

Vivaldi imports FF bookmarks!

Hi Chrisnielsensmith, are you seeing this error:

Fix "The bookmarks and history system will not be functional" error message

If not, could you try using the Restore feature. When you click the Choose File item on the bottom of the menu, you can point Firefox up to the Old Firefox Data folder, then into the bookmarkbackups folder. Each backup file has the creation date and number of items coded into the name. Will any of the files restore?

Restore bookmarks from backup or move them to another computer
