I totally understand your frustration, but Tyler Downer is right when he says that tabs on bottom is not the standard setup for Firefox .

When you say that you've always had the tabs on bottom, couldn't it be that you've had the add-on 'Tabs on Bottom' installed (and maybe forgot you even had it)  ? That add-on stopped working as the developer didn't migrate his add-on to Webextensions.

Despite what some contributors to Firefox believe, putting tabs in the default location above the address bar is just bad ergonomics. It seems to be a good ergonomic design but on deeper reflection just makes life unnecessarily hard. "Tabs on top" is a sufficient problem to color people's view of Firefox and drive some of us away. It needs to be fixed.

Thanks to above (MkII), I've added chrome.css and temporarily got things to a working state, but if it proves hard I'll switch to a better browser. Why is it so hard to get a good browser that is informative, tells you its own name, and is ergonomic? Edge is a nightmare from all those points of view, Chrome is the best but seems to have developed some bad habits, and Firefox is variable. The "tabs at the top" people need to be moved on.

PS this sort of design blunder is also why many people resist updating. Updates often lead to unpleasant changes (like tabs above address bar) and so people become very wary of updating. So many "improvements" are just change for change sake (to make it 'modern' or 'different') and so many result from a temporary win by one camp of opinion amongst mozilla contributors over more sensible people.

eg Now that I have implemented chrome.css and it all works, I will aim to not update for as long as possible in case this fix is disabled.

No, you and Tyler are wrong. Maybe nowadays it is not the standard-design of Firefox anymore - but it was. And it was the design most of us users loved! What Mozilla does today regarding design is just uncomfortable and ugly. Just watch how many "tab-bottom-threads you find through Google.

However ..... we're living in the 'here and now' and even Bob Dylan wrote a song about it : "The times, they are a-changin' .... "

But seriously : I totally understand why not everybody is pleased with (any) changes - it's all a matter of taste : what one likes, the other one hates. It may sound corny, but there's just no pleasing everyone.

Probably Dylan never heard the sentence "never change a running system"...I totally understand that design is a matter of taste - but it is possible to please everyone especially in this case: by making it changeable - in an easy and understandable way ;)

I hear you, Micha, and I agree with you up to a point - the point where you say :

"making it changeable - in an easy and understandable way "

But wouldn't it be wonderful if we could change everything that's wrong in this world .......  ?

But I digress - you want the tabs on the bottom and I want them on top. Probably just because we're used to having them where they are - or in your case : were. I must admit that I would not be very happy should the tabs suddenly show up on the bottom - but I would get used to it (I hope) ......

Here's an idea : why don't you submit your wishes and suggestions here :

Worth a try .......

What a rude reply! You see, some of us here have been using Firefox since the versions were in the low single digits-- back when it was good (and tabs were on the BOTTOM by default!). What made it good? EXACTLY THAT-- it was *highly* customizable by each user, so that he could make it 'his browser' with everything exactly how he wanted it. When some nitwit developer moved the tabs to the top because he thought it was pretty, each user could EASILY move them back to the bottom where they belong with just a click, and not have to learn to be a programmer to undo the damage. Tabs on top? Easy. Tabs on bottom? Easy. *click*

But then in the 'rapid release' versions (from v. 5 on through the teens), the developers started getting a MicroSoft level of arrogance ("We know what's best for you!") and started making customization more and more difficult. Chrome was getting popular, so Firefox tried to turn itself into a copy of Chrome rather than a great and different product it had always been that users loved. (If I'd have wanted Chrome, I'd have gotten Chrome instead of a bad copy of it).

By Australis (v.29), they had almost removed everything one could custom-tailor to his liking, and the only way to get it back was via a crap-load of add-ons, which made it a bloated, slow system-hog.

Someone mentioned 'Big Brother' and they also added in a bunch of those little 'hidden' goodies (for example, a 'hidden' file of all downloads that remained even after the user was led to believe he'd 'cleared downloads' from the download window).

Next up? We could no longer be trusted with add-ons unless Big Brother Mozilla approved them. So, there went some more cool features. Next they started removing lines from about:config so even the power users and geeks couldn't get things back the way they preferred them. THEN came the external/cloud-based add-ons, which destroyed nearly all the rest of the cool features, and removed all privacy from any that remain as add-ons.

Flash forward, and with this current version (59), I have now lost 90% of my favorite add-ons, most of which I've used and loved for many years, and I'm now told I *will* have my tabs at the top, whether I like it that way or not, and after I've had them at the bottom (where they both look and function better and more naturally) for 12-16 hours a day, every day for OVER TWELVE YEARS. And now, in what used to be MY browser, I keep trying to click to a tab, and instead open a bookmark into my current tab.

Someone said all this makes people very wary of upgrading-- YES!!! I keep my little netbook updated for security, but on my big home desktop, I'm still running v. 45.0.2-- with my freakin' tabs on the BOTTOM, and with all my favorite old (code-resident!) add-ons that don't even have current substitutes available AT ALL to do what I need or want to do with 'my' browser.

Firefox is ruined and unrecognizable to me now. PaleMoon or WaterFox, here I come! </rant>
