How can I restore my old home screen in Quantum? I miss my speed dial.

I had customized it for 4 rows of 6 columns, each website pinned to its slot, and did most of my browsing straight from there. The new home page offers five slots for "top sites" and an enormous field of blank space (I am simply uninterested in pockets, highlights, snippets, etc and have removed them instantly). What are the controls in about:config that will let me return to an approximation of my old home page?

The new browser experience is great overall and I love Mozilla. However... I am going to need my speed dial back...

Hi, goto about:config and double click on these booleans: browser.newtabpage.activity-stream.aboutHome.enabled browser.newtabpage.activity-stream.enabled to set them to false, this will restore your old new tab page.

    • Update: Fixed first boolean!

That did it! In case anybody else reads this, the first boolean (if you're searching) is

browser.newtabpage.activity-stream.aboutHome.enabled

Thanks for that, I use that feature extensively.

I have: browser.newtabpage.activity-stream.aboutHome.autoFocus;false

I do not have: browser.abouthome.activity-stream.enabled Is that the same???

I do not have: browser.abouthome.activity-stream.enabled as a line either.

I would really like to have my speeddial back as well. I followed these instructions but now I have a blank new tab instead of my speed dial back. What did I do wrong. I can find speeddial in about:config but don't dare change anything as I don't want to mess something up.

I'm in exactly the same situation. I found the two booleans mentioned in the solution to the first post and duly toggled them to false. I have checked and everyone of my critically important speeddial links in 'about:config' (4 r x 5 c) all contain the correct data. But I don't know how to invoke it to produce a speeddial page!

Please help before insanity takes over and I'm forced to use IE11 (which is especially difficult when one is in a straitjacket!).

This sounds bitchy I know but for a platform that prides itself on its popular support and constantly asks for donations, it's a pity that this post has been so silent - not even a "Whoops sorry!" from the people who have caused so many problems, and wasted so much time we trusted them with.

Great answer, BUT... not we're not all programmers with complete understanding of these things... we need EACH STEP to the end.

I got through the about:config steps just fine. I changed both about:config steps above.

But NOW WHAT? I closed the browser and reopened it (3x!). Where are my speed dials?

I rather like the FVD Speed Dial, but I had 3 separate speed dials in a 4x4 arrangement! I reeeeeally don't want to have to backtrack all that was there. I just want my old ones back.

Seems to be it was Firefox that introduced this "speed dial" concept years ago - first I had seen it, anyway. It used to be in the File menu. Then it wasn't and we had to install add-ons. Now you take it completely away. No fair, Mozilla....

I set the following to false

browser.newtabpage.activity-stream.aboutHome.enabled browser.newtabpage.activity-stream.enabled

Now I have a blank tab page. Where are all my speed dial saved pages?

I have been with Firefox for so many years. When no one had heard of it. There was a vision for a browser of the people. What a sell out. So many extensions no longer work, and no one from the team cares enough to even make any comment. A buy out by Microsift could not have been worse. I am now looking for another browser, one that has high ideals and sticks to them, rather than just using them as a fund raising gimick. You may disagree, good luck to you. When years of your personal investment in a vision is shredded you may feel differently too.

Can anyone tell me how to load an old version of Firefox and prevent it instantly updating to this new trash heap! I DON'T WANT IT!!!!!!!!!!

If I can't do this then Firefox is dead in the water.

I choose to load the old version and someone helped me so here are the instructions I followed BristolPete.

Choose Tools from the menu in the upper left of firefox. choose Options. Choose General from the menu on the left. Scroll down to Firefox Updates and choose "check for updates but let you choose to install them."

Now go to this link https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/install-older-version-of-firefox

Scroll down and click on "Firefox 55.0.3" Save the file on your desktop or somewhere easy to find. Wait for it to download and then close firefox. Open the file you save and it will load the old version.

I was so happy to see Speed dial again :)

Thanks to BristolPete for the downgrade info. I wonder whether 56.02 would also be suitable? I haven't tried it because one has to downgrade to the current 57 version to find it...

I have rarely been so frustrated than by the latest version 57 of Firefox. I've submitted the following via the "https://qsurvey.mozilla.com/s3/FirefoxInput/" page (sad face), of course.

The latest FF Quantum appears to be camel i.e. a horse designed by a committee. I've used FF for years thinking that Mozilla would not sink to the level of MS (with IE and dubious opsys "upgrades") and with Opera, which not all that long ago suddenly threw away the versions that had run slickly for years and dropped a nasty variant of Chrome on unsuspecting victims. Why on earth could you not re-write the new version for speed, security and efficiency but still retain the previous functionality?? Then you can ask real users for suggestions of added features and layout changes BEFORE implementing them. This is all so obvious I'm astounded that Mozilla has made such a huge blunder. Please see the forum entries under "How can I restore my old home screen in Quantum? I miss my speed dial." and respond to it. I can't type much more as the tears of frustration are making my keyboard wet. P.S. Can you recommend a good browser (not IE, not Opera, not Chrome or Safari and definitely not FF Quantum!)

I, too, am frustrated that they took away the old Speed Dial. Shame on them for thinking it was an improvement! I want my old Speed Dial back!

Cyrillick is so right. This is a case of FF doing the worst thing that Microsoft does - beta testing upgrades on their users without telling them. Had they put out a beta version and asked people for their views there would have been no problem. Come on, someone from the development team give us your spin on this. Your silence condemns you.

I had the same problem and for the moment, here is a way to recover the urls.

Open your profile folder. In my case, it is, C:\Users\MyName\AppData\Roaming\Mozilla\Firefox\Profiles\xrhnanm5.default in Windows 8.

Open prefs.js

You will see the links as user_pref("extensions.speeddial.thumbnail-1-url", "xxxxxxx");

Hope this will help !

I have my speed dials back. I followed Ruby75 advice on how to download an older version of Firefox, then went into About:Config and turn off automatic update.

Thanks Ruby75.
