Preferences being changed on startup
I'm having a problem with my prefs changing when I start Firefox. One day, my theme changed on me and everytime I open firefox it changes back to the dark theme, which I have never used. I am also unable to change my home page for longer than the current session.
When I make the changes to theme and home page, I am able to verify that the changes are made in the prefs.js file. When I close Firefox, the correct values are still reflected in the prefs.js file. When i re-open firefox, the theme and homepage revert back to what I don't want, and those values are in the prefs.js file. So something is changing the prefs when I start firefox.
When I update the prefs, then restart in safe mode, it keeps my theme but reverts back to the old homepage.
I have done a refresh, and also uninstalled and re-installed firefox. I have no extensions. I have nothing but the stock themes (Compact Light, Compact Dark, and Default) compact dark is the one I don't want that keeps loading. The plugins that show up are "OpenH264 Video Codec provided by Sysco Systems, Inc.", "Shockwave Flash", and "Widevine Content Decryption Module provided by Google, Inc." Doesn't look like there is a way to remove those. Upon reinstalling, all of my bookmarks came back so I know items are being pulled in from the prior installation.
I've run several scans for virus, malware, adware, etc. It's a work computer so it's well protected and appears clean in that regard.
Any suggestions on how to go about diagnosing and/or solving this problem would be greatly appreciated. I'm an engineer and tech savvy but not a software guy.

Update to version 57.0 resolved the issue.

Continues after a Refresh, hmm. There is a way to inject settings into all of your Firefox profiles using a configuration file (Autoconfig file) in the program folder. This normally does not exist, but maybe your IT has opinions on what settings you should use? You can find more information on that possibility in this article: http://kb.mozillazine.org/Locking_preferences
Are you using sync? Disable it.
Start Firefox in Safe Mode {web link} by holding down the <Shift> (Mac=Options) key, and then starting Firefox.
A small dialog should appear. Click Start In Safe Mode (not Refresh). Is the problem still there?

Oh, and not using advanced system care. I do have zscaler (antivirus), but it predates this issue.
You can check if you have a user.js file in the profile folder to initialize prefs each time Firefox starts. The user.js file will only be present if you or other software has created this file and normally won't be present.
You can check its content with a text editor (right-click: "Open with"; do not double-click). The user.js file is read each time Firefox is started and initializes preferences to the value specified in this file, so preferences set via user.js can only be changed temporarily for the current session.
You can delete the user.js file if you didn't create this file yourself.
You can use the button on the "Help -> Troubleshooting Information" (about:support) page to go to the current Firefox profile folder or use the about:profiles page.

This was erroneously marked as solved. There was a user.js file but it was empty. I deleted it and the problem persists.
Start your Computer in safe mode with network support. Then start Firefox. Try Safe websites. Is the problem still there?

Changed the theme and homepage, verified prefs file was updated, then shut down and started in safe mode. Kept the theme, but it changed the homepage back.

I also made a new profile. Same behavior, it automatically changes to the dark theme and goes to the same homepage (an old one of mine).

Type about:support in the address bar and press Enter. Under the main banner, press the button; Copy Text To Clipboard.. Now in the Reply Box on the forum page, do a right-click in the box and select Paste.

The homepage is being changed to a microsoft sharepoint page, an old homepage of mine. Below is the paste of the support info. Note that a user.js file is somehow being created automatically upon startup, that file appears to be empty. Appreciate your help.

You appear to have received a special funnelcake build (mozilla131). These Funnelcake builds are an experiment offered as a special Firefox version to (new) users for testing the user experience. Note that this also places you on a special update channel as you can see in "Help -> About Firefox".
You can uninstall your current version and reinstall the official Firefox build from the Mozilla server.

I uninstalled and reinstalled. The funnelcake line no longer shows up in "about". After I reinstalled, it went straight to the homepage that I can't get rid of (and the dark theme that I can't get rid of). It didn't go to the welcome to firefox page which I believe it should have. Is there a way I can find out what process is changing my prefs file on startup?
You can create a new profile to test if your current profile is causing the problem.

If the new profile works then you can transfer files from a previously used profile to the new profile, but be cautious not to copy corrupted files to avoid carrying over problems.
