Firefox crashes without starting up

I am writing this on a different computer to the one in question, as it has no functioning browser at this time.
The problem started in July, when starting firefox, the crash reporter comes up. Restarting brings up the crash reporter again. This is on a second machine, so I waited hoping an update would resolve the issue. I updated the system (Debian 8) a few times since, using: sudo apt-get update sudo apt-get dist-upgrade
I deleted my firefox profile I uninstalled, restarted then reinstalled firefox from the synaptic package manager. I tried running firefox-esr with the suffixes: firefox-esr -safe-mode firefox-esr -gksu I cannot get into firefox to remove or update any addons (noscript and maybe one or two more) which may not be present since reinstalling?
uname -a produces: Linux BackupPC 3.16.0-4-amd64 #1 SMP Debian 3.16.43-2+deb8u3 (2017-08-15) x86_64 GNU/Linux
The crash report contents contain:

This report also contains technical information about the state of the application when it crashed.
I hope someone can point me in the right direction, as I can only think of installing Debian from scratch, as a solution at this point. Many thanks

Hello, sorry to read your post :( If installation from source does not work, can you try to install FF from Mozilla website? https://www.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/organizations/all/

Ya, big time crashes it seems. I think it is in a Firefox Library (lib) though found references to VLC and IBM when googled firefox libgobject-2.0.so.0.5000.3
Ok, it shows your running ver 52 and the latest ESR ver is 52.4.1 So what say you just uninstall Firefox and down load the updated version from https://www.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/organizations/all/ I hope as last post you made have another browser ........ If not is only way going to fix this is to get it to run and I know of no cures for the amount of files crashing.

Hi there Thankyou for your suggestion. I downloaded the latest ESR release yesterday (ver 52.4.1), which is the one I ran. Your post has reminded me of a mis-hap on the computer which I think explains the whole problem. Several months ago, whilst trying to get USB2.0 working in virtualbox, I followed some instructions from a website which changed the operating system to Debian SID (unstable). I realised what I had done after the first update which gave all sorts of "UNSTABLE" warnings. I reverted back after a couple of weeks, but I think this must be the cause of the problem. Is it likely that this would be the cause of my problems? Would fixing this fall outside the scope of Mozilla support?
Hello, yes, playing with unstable packages may affect your computer behavior (with Firefox or other tools). I do not mean it's your problem, but it's a nice clue! Does everything work with the ESR?
