I think you would have to disable the new design to make it possible to rearrange tiles.

  • browser.newtabpage.activity-stream.enabled = false

Thank you for the suggestion. It would be nice if this could be fixed somehow so it's working in the new design too.

Works for me too in FF 57. Toggle to false to rearrange tiles, then toggle back to true (if you want) and tiles are still in order you set while in false. Cool.

You can manually rearrange the order of the "top sites" icons on the "newtab" page by altering their order in this way: 1.) Open Firefox and type "about:config" in Address Bar - Hit "Enter" 2.) Type "browser.newtabpage.pinned" 3.) Double Click the "browser.newtabpage.pinned" line to open window. 4.) In the "Enter string value" window you will see the list of current "top sites" listed in the order they appear on the "newtab" page. 5.) The order the "top sites" entries appear in this string is the order they will appear on the "new tab" page. The order can be altered by cutting the code from entry before an open curly bracket "{" until past the close curly bracket "}". Keep in mind that there needs to be a comma between entries - but no comma before the first entry or after the last. 6. ) Close Firefox and reopen for the change to manifest.

swade, double clicking "browser.newtabpage.pinned" only toggles false to true, no window opens. I right clicked modify and a chose string but it's blank.

You can temporarily revert to the old version of the about:newtab page to be able to drag items around and possibly pin tiles. After you are done you can re-enable the new Activity Stream design. That way you do not need to edit the pref.

You can disable the new Activity Stream design and revert to the earlier design by setting this pref to false.

  • browser.newtabpage.activity-stream.enabled

Re-enable the new design by toggling this pref to true with a double-click.

I don't know why, but sometimes this works and sometimes it doesn't. I've done it several times since I have to reinstall Firefox many times. I seems to work about 50% of the time. I guess it must be a glitch in my pc. Thanks so much for the help.

This is now possible in FF 59, except on Android version for some reason.
