Why did Facebook messenger stop working on Firefox mobile?

I would like to be able to access Messenger via web browsers on my Android phone rather than having to use the Messenger app. Since the latest update to Firefox (47), I lost access to the site. The Facebook Messenger page redirects me to the Google Play store to download the Messenger app. Is there any way to regain access to the Messenger page? I would prefer not having to download any more applications than I have to for both convenience, privacy, and security sake.
