Why won't Firefox let me sign in to create a new Sync account

When I choose Settings > General > Sign in Firefox for Android Beta, the attempted connection is never made, and I just receive a never ending spinning circle, even though my internet connection is just fine.

I'm attempting to set up a new Sync account, but Firefox won't let me.
