I am using Firefox 48.0.2 on a Window 7 Enterprise, 64-bit operating system. The problem I am having is this. I use several web-based tools during the course of my work day and I have noticed some changes in the way data is rendered within the last 2 weeks.

In one instance, I download data from a client’s site via spreadsheet. I get the usual pop up asking what to do with the file (open or save). However, Firefox is also permanently opening a blank tab in the process. Prior this, the blank tab would open and close in the time that it takes the dialogue box to pop. I can temporarily resolve the issue using the following steps: Help menu/question mark, Troubleshooting Information, Refresh Firefox. However, whenever I reboot the machine, Firefox reverts to opening the blank tab again.

Additionally, there is another web-based tool that I use that includes drop down menus and I am noticing the font has changed in the drop down choices. This started the same time as the above issue, and is resolved in the same way (at the same time). They both occur together so when I see one thing, I know the other is also going to occur.

How can I permanently remove this task of refreshing Firefox from my now daily routine?

Rebooted again, and the issue has not reappeared since the reinstall. All is well with the world again.

Note: Some software, like Advanced SystemCare with Surfing Protection, can protect files in the Firefox profile folder against changes. If you have such software then check the settings or uninstall this software.

Thank you for your response.

The KB you have referenced suggests that refreshing Firefox may resolve the issue. Unfortunately, I have done this every day for at least the past 5 days (twice a day if there is a Windows update that requires a system reboot), to no avail.

Additionally, there has not been any new software added to the machine.

And the protection programs?

McAfee I believe. I won't be able to confirm until I return to the office on Monday.

After attempting the troubleshooting steps provided in the Firefox help database, I ended up uninstalling and reinstalling the software. This was 2 days ago and so far so good; I am hoping that the issue may now be resolved.
