The ESR release is based on Firefox 45, so the features of Firefox 46 and later are not included in the ESR release. Unless there was a feature change in the past 4 months that was really valuable to you, the difference probably is minor.

Thanks much, that was very fast indeed. Can you off-hand think of any features added in 46 and 47 that might be widely used by an average user, i.e. a non-nerd, like myself?

It's probably easier if I refer to you the following page. It has a link for each release's Release Notes which has highlights of the most significant changes. Then you can judge whether anything in Firefox 46, 47 or 48 sounds like something you can't live without:

The Firefox version 48 release in August 2016 will be the last Firefox version to receive new feature or security updates on OS X systems that are no longer supported by Apple: OS X 10.6, 10.7 and 10.8. Starting with the Firefox version 49 release in September 2016, Firefox is no longer supported on OS X systems below 10.9.

Firefox ESR branch tends to get eight updates so Firefox 45.8.0esr will be out when Firefox 53.0 is Released. The 45.8.0esr may be the last unless Mozilla extends support for the then older 45.0 ESR branch as Firefox 52.0 ESR will be the current ESR then.

Note you are able to try out the Fx45 ESR in advance of needing it because it is possible to install multiple versions of Firefox. When installing the ESR choose some adjacent location, so it does not replace the current Release. It is a good idea to use separate Firefox profiles for each Firefox version. It is possible to transfer and copy things like bookmarks between profiles as may be necessary.
