I cannot delete emails with the delete button or the right click menu

I am using Mozilla Thunderbird in Linux Mint and for a new installation of Thunderbird V.38.3 using POP to collect my mail I find that I cannot delete the emails from my inbox using the button. Neither can I use the delete function under the right click option. Compacting the folder doesn't work either and I have no mail in my trash folder. There is not an option under the preferences Tab to delete emails after a given selectable time period although this option existed in a prior version of Thunderbird. I just want the option to delete email I don't want.
