I can type in an address in the address bar or choose from the dropdown, but Firefox will not respond. I updated my add-ons, but that didn't help, so I started the browser in safe mode, but the problem persists. I tried installing a newer version, even though it said I was already up-to-date, but that still hasn't fixed the problem.

Any ideas?

Thanks for posting back and confirming a creating a new profile fixed this for you.

I made few posts and updated most of them, but missed this thread until now. I will unmark the post you chose as a solution and mark this on instead.

I know it is not intuitive but for all suffering from this bug it is a problem with the bookmarks database that the breaks the: address bar | location bar | URL bar |awesome bar, or whatever you know it as.

Current Suggested fix. (Bug 1180419 related) Rename the file places.sqlite as explained in this recently revised article.

I will post further information shortly and updates lower down in this thread, and edit my prior post/solution (#answer-750303)

There is a bug fix in one of the pre release versions already, & with any luck that will be in the ordinary release within a few days.

Hi, try clicking on Restore Defaults as shown in Customize Firefox controls, buttons and toolbars.

If that doesn't work, and since the problem persists in Safe Mode, try the Refresh feature (called "Reset" in older Firefox versions), which can fix many issues by restoring Firefox to its factory default state while saving your bookmarks, history, passwords, cookies, and other essential information.

Note: When you use this feature, you will lose any extensions, toolbar customizations, and some preferences. See the Refresh Firefox - reset add-ons and settings article for more information.

To Refresh Firefox:

  1. Open the Troubleshooting Information page using one of these methods:
    • Click the menu button New Fx Menu, click help Help-29 and select Troubleshooting Information. A new tab containing your troubleshooting information should open.
    • If you're unable to access the Help menu, type about:support in your address bar to bring up the Troubleshooting Information page.
  2. At the top right corner of the page, you should see a button that says "Refresh Firefox" ("Reset Firefox" in older Firefox versions). Click on it.
  3. Firefox will close. After the refresh process is completed, Firefox will show a window with the information that is imported.
  4. Click Finish and Firefox will reopen.

Did this fix the problem? Please report back to us!

Thank you.

If as suspected this is the issue reported in Bug 1180419

  1. There are workarounds or solutions.
  2. There is something you could do to help us in investigating this.
    UPDATE 10th July.
Thanks to all who helped, progress is being made, developers received information, and bug fix is already being tested in a pre-release version of Firefox

Sorry if this looks rather daunting.

If you need further help with any of this just say so. And of course if you just want fixes and not to help us; that is ok too; but you may need to wait a while longer as we try to figure out the best solutions, or get a fix into Firefox itself.

Quick Fix If you create a new additional Firefox profile you should find Firefox will work from that profile. There are additional steps that will be needed later to get Firefox back to normal. To save space instead of writing the steps in full here please look at the linked articles

At this time only follow the instructions in the first two section: Starting the Profile Manager and Creating a profile Maybe a suitable name for the profile would be test-2015. Please do not try any of the other steps such as renaming or deleting any profile without first of all asking again here.

When you next start Firefox you will get an option to choose which profile to use.

Does Firefox work ok from the new profile ?

  • NO (Or You failed to create the new profile)
=> Please post back, we will try some other method of helping you.
    OR skip to XX
  • YES => Please continue with these instructions.

We will try

  1. To ensure data and settings are preserved and safely backed up.
  2. A more focussed fix.
  3. To obtain some useful information to help everyone
  4. To get Firefox back to normal.

One. Please backup your Firefox Profile. Follow these instructions: Note. This refers to the original profile, usually called Default. Not the newly created profile.

You need to put this somewhere safe, outside of Firefox's profile or program paths. A folder, on the Desktop, or in My Documents are suitable locations.

Two: Another fix By now you will be used to finding your profile folder. Navigate to the profile folder by your chosen method. Look for the file named places.sqlite. Make sure this is the original profile, not the backup or the new one, and that Firefox is closed. Rename the file places.sqlite as places.sqlite.original01

This becomes yet another backup, but easily reinstated, and at the same time is disabled, and forces Firefox to create a new file. For others this has worked as a fix.

At this point Firefox should be working and fairly similar to what it was before. The only lost information should be the last set of bookmarks added. If you are lucky that may be only one bookmark. Please let us know what happened.

Three Help us by providing the error log. This is the probably the easiest part.

First we need a broken Firefox. If yours is not fixed then use that. If it is fixed then we will not try to undo all your hard work ! Instead we will try to break the test profile, and use that.

To break the test profile (Do the following whilst Firefox is closed)

  1. Take copy of places.sqlite.original01 and place that in the test profile.
  2. Rename the test profile's places.sqlite to places.sqlite.small (it is likely to be the smallest file, and probably never be needed again)
  3. Rename what is now the test profile'splaces.sqlite.original01 to places.sqlite

OK now start Firefox with the test profile. It should be broken.

  1. Open Firefox's error console
    Keyboard shortcut Ctrl+Shift+J
OR Menu {Three bar icon) -> Developer {Spanner icon) -> Browser Console
  2. Initially try with clicking the coloured tabs and selecting for JS -> warnings (edit ERRORS) and Net -> warnings (edit ERRORS). Then key in a URL and try to go to it. The console should log errors.

If you get this for please post back we can check exactly what information the developers want. At this moment the main thing is just knowing you can see the error console and that it reacts when you attempt to load or reload a page.

Four What is not working or need fixing now ? Hopefully you lost only one or a few bookmarks. We could make attempts to recover them or they may not even be important to you. For instance

  1. Clearing the places.sqlite in the test profile
  2. Importing the HTML file made in stage one
See also Import Bookmarks from an HTML file
  3. May result in a set of bookmarks including the folder Recently Bookmarked that may contain the missing bookmarks.

BUG Notes Bug 1180419 - After upgrading to Firefox 39, could not launch URL from Address bar. Enter key won't work.

  • Ordinarily we suggest it is inappropriate to comment in bugs as explained in etiquette
  • You can follow the bug progress from the link above.
  • If you are more interested you may register and CC yourself to follow by email.
  • And/OR you may wish to answer direct questions from those in the bug yourself i.e. providing error reports. We will happily pass on the information though if it is less bother.

Edit it is probably the errors not the warnings that will be of interest.

Yeah, I had to make a new profile. Luckily, I was able to restore from an earlier bookmark backup, since places.sqlite wouldn't stop buggering everything up.

Hopefully this bug gets fixed soon! I wound up having to go through the process on both my laptop and now my desktop.

My log just says this over and over:

Bug 1180419 - Cannot load URLs from the address bar if places.sqlite is corrupt Anyone renaming the places.sqlite file loses their History. That is potentially a big problem at least for some people. One of its effects is to stop the addressbar auto completing with previously visited sites.

I am hoping the bug fix will allow the original places.sqlite to be used again. There is also possibilities of fixing corrupt places.sqlite files, but that is not something the average end user will be able to attempt, at least not without assistance.

I am not even sure your problem was caused by that bug, or maybe not entirely by that bug.

I suggest you create another additional profile for testing and restoration purposes.

Note it is bad practice to rename or delete profiles once created.

I usually suggest unless you are able to manually create profiles using the command lines and edits then you will be using the built in profile manager and should not delete or rename any profile. It is far too easy to make mistakes that break Firefox or permanently lose information.

You will always be able to confirm which profile is in use from the troubleshooting information page button (Shortcut to the page navigate to about:support assuming the address bar works !) With Firefox closed overwrite the brand new profile's file places.sqlite with a copy of the file in the broken profile. If that breaks the addressbar when running from the new profile you have the Bug1180419 problem. Rename the corrupt file and it will fix that profile again on restart.

You will no doubt want to get Firefox back to normal or as near to as possible so please look at

There is an advanced method of fixing corrupt places.sqlite, but it is anticipated it is beyond the capabilities of many Firefox users, without additional assistance . ( See

SHA-1 Even our support site has SHA-1 available for compatibility reasons, so if you use Firefox's web console (Keyboard shortcut Ctrl+Shift+K ) you will see warnings. For more info please see

I am presuming you are only seeing log warnings, and not getting popups or sites being blocked. (If you are having problems then what happens in the new profile is that ok ?)

If you do have a corrupt places.sqlite, then hopefully it will work again after the bug fix.

If so you will then be able to overwrite the places.sqlite with the corrupt version to restore the History, and upate that for bookmarks with the internal automated bookmarks backups. If you collect any additional bookmarks whilst using temporary profiles you may consider exporting nd importing as HTML they just tg on to the bottom of exiting listings, they do not overwrite the existing lists. It is important to realise the different affects of restore vs import

I have this problem too, and I am completely confused by what to do. If i figure out what the heck you're talking about is it going to wipe out my history, etc? This really sucks.
