OLD COMPUTER NEEDS FIREFOX (BROWSER) UPGRADE NOT BETA....
Hello, DELL DIMENSION XPS E-520 (2007) WINDOWS XP HOME SP 3 FIREFOX 14.0.1 AVAST! 2014.9.0.2021 THUNDERBIRD version 2.0.0.24 (20100228) EPSON WF 545 – ALL UP-TO-DATE
I need to upgrade Firefox and Thunderbird but recently have spent xs time troubleshooting an auto FF upgrade to 38.05 on another DELL (VOSTRO LAPTOP - WIN XP PRO SP 3 U-T-D) especially in regards to printing.
This PC is old, and used a lot. so, I REALLY WANT the browser to be streamlined and tried / used and stable.
Is there a FF 20.x I could try? I realize the security risks I may be subject to but I'm also aware of time used to T-shoot…. Avast! is good and up-to-date
I also read here: “Software bloat -- 3 Alternatives to software bloat” http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Software_bloat#Alternatives_to_software_bloat that FF is included as an UN-bloated example. PLEASE ADVISE!
If I upgrade the XPS E520 to FF 20.X, can I reverse it?

You can get the normal Firefox from Download Firefox Full Installer For All languages And Systemsv38.0.5 {web link}
"Is there a FF 20.x I could try?" No responsible contributor in this forum will provide advice about installing a version of Firefox which is that old. Sure, it may be newer than what you posted here with (14.0.1 = 6 versions newer), but it lacks dozens of security fixes when compared to the latest 38.0.5 and just isn't as secure.
If you want something "older" that works like Firefox, why not a different Gecko based web browser"? There is at least one which does security updates, while still using the same GUI that Firefox 14.0.1 uses. Please check for a PM with the name of that browser.
Only Firefox 38.0.5 and the 31.7.0esr and 38.0.1esr are supported with security updates currently. The old 24.8.1esr from December 2014 is NOT up to date.
How much physical memory is there in that computer?
If you meet the System Requirements for the current release then you should update to the current release.

Having major issues with a DELL VOSTRO XP PRO SP3 laptop and printing (and browsing) for > 1 week. (Cannot print: Either crashes or prints blank pages) ... I am sure the "old" PC would NOT be able to "handle" FF 38.x.

Problem with 38 is I cannot get it to run "smoothly" and especially print on a *newer* dell vostro win XP PRO SP3 laptop. (Either FF crashes or prints blank pages...) I even installed a new printer and same occurred.

2 GB is not very much if you run many applications at the same time.
Can you install more memory?
Does Windows start paging data to the page file on the hard drive or is there enough free memory available?

SSE2 intructions have been in Intel processors since the Pentium 4 came out in 2001, so that shouldn't be the issue you quoted from Wikipedia concerning the PM browser. you know what PM means ;>) Basically, if the PC runs WinXP (any SP version), it's got SSE2.
Go for the Atom/WinXP build of PM. Although it has been 3 months since I stopped using it, I have an old XP box that has similar specs to what you have, except mine is an AMD Athlon 64 2.2 GHz LE-1600 AM2 socket with 2 GB DDR2 RAM and the mobo was first released in 2006 - I got it cheap near the end of its production life in 2008. No problems with PM Atom/WinXP as recent as 3 months ago when I built a new PC for myself.
Whatever you decide to do, stick with an up-to-date browser version. Forget about Firefox 14.0.1 - it's too damn old and lacks many dozens (if not many hundreds) of security fixes. Bad enough to have an E-O-L operating system like WinXP, but continuing to use such an old browser is just plain foolish; especially if you're using it for online financial transactions or have "private information" saved (like if it was on paper you'd either tear it up or shred it before tossing it in the garbage).

It is not worth it, and It manages what it has well.
The system requirements are more than met (although I've always found S.R.s to UNDERESTIMATE actual requirements)
