I need to download my daily IRA results to my PC. It won't do that!

Every day I visit the web site of a financial management company. After logging in, I can see the financial results of the IRA I have with this company. When I use AOL to do this, I click on a hyperlink labeled "Export"; then I select the name of the file and the location the file should be saved to. For example "C:\My Documents". When I click on "Save", the file downloads to the selected destination and I can open it with Microsoft Excel.

When I try to do this with Firefox, it does not ask for the name and destination of the file and, even though the down pointing arrow flashes, the file is not downloaded.

What do I need to do to get this file downloaded to my PC?

If you click the blue download arrow, does it show that somewhat was downloaded, or is it completely missing from the list?

You didn't mention whether downloads work normally on others sites. Do you already have Firefox set to ask you where to save files? That is set in the Options dialog, as described in this article: Startup, home page, tabs, and download settings ("Always ask me where to save files").

More generally, when you have a problem with one particular site, a good "first thing to try" is clearing your Firefox cache and deleting your saved cookies for the site.

(1) Bypass Firefox's Cache

Use Ctrl+Shift+r to reload the page fresh from the server.

Alternately, you also can clear Firefox's cache completely using:

"3-bar" menu button (or Tools menu) > Options > Advanced

On the Network mini-tab > Cached Web Content : "Clear Now"

If you have a large hard drive, this might take a few minutes.

(2) Remove the site's cookies (save any pending work first). While viewing a page on the site, try either:

  • right-click and choose View Page Info > Security > "View Cookies"
  • (menu bar) Tools > Page Info > Security > "View Cookies"
  • click the padlock or globe icon in the address bar > More Information > "View Cookies"

In the dialog that opens, you can remove the site's cookies individually.

Then try reloading the page, logging in again, and downloading. Does that help?
