Link from some websites to e-mail address produces error message 'Could not perform this operation because the default mail client is not properly installed'.

Although using Firefox, error message is labelled Windows Internet Explorer! I have upgraded to Firefox 36.0.1 but makes no difference. Is problem with my installation of Internet Explorer or the web page with the link? When I get the problem I have to shut down and restart.
