After a clean install of Windows 7 64 bit on a new hard drive, I downloaded and installed Firefox. Within seconds of starting Firefox my computer locked up. I had to restart the computer to get it going. This locking up also happened several times using Win 7 & Firefox on an old hard drive. I have uninstalled Firefox so I can use my computer. I ran Firefox for several years on Windows XP without any problems. How do I get it to work with Windows 7?

Guys, I think I fixed the problem! I replaced the 8500GT video card with an 8400GS card yesterday and downloaded their 337.88 drivers. So far, so good. No crashes/lockups/freezes. I appreciate all your help! I guess we can close this one.

That's a strange issue, and I'm positive Firefox isn't locking your computer, because there is no way for Firefox to do that.

It just says "no crash reports submitted". But, when I opened Firefox, before I had the chance to type in about:crashes, my machine locked up. I was able to get the info on the second try. If I don't open Firefox, I can surf all over in IE 11 without any lock ups. Strange.

Don't have any problem opening Firefox. It just doesn't run very long before it locks up/freezes the computer. By the way, I loaded Windows on a brand new HD, did all the Windows updates and then downloaded Firefox. So there was no software on the HD except the OS. Then when I opened Firefox, within seconds my computer locked up.

So, I guess no more replies means I don't use Firefox anymore. Thanks Microsoft, for making me move from XP, where Firefox worked, to Windows 7 where I can't use Firefox. Maybe I should just buy a Mac.

Hi 2R15, Firefox hangs or is not responding - How to fix Where did you download Firefox from?

more options

If the entire computer hangs then this is more likely a problem with other (security) software that is running or windows services and drivers.

Boot the computer in Windows Safe Mode with network support (press F8 on the boot screen) as a test.

Is there anything in the Windows Event log about these hangs/crashes?

more options

guigs2-I downloaded from Mozilla. Reading from the link you supplied, it doesn't sound like Firefox is hanging. Something else is causing the computer to freeze.

cor-el - I ran it in safe mode for ten minutes and not get the freeze up. I updated my BIOS thinking that might help (BIOS was dated 2009). It did make a difference:now it seems to surf OK but if I try to enlarge a window to fill the screen by clicking and dragging the edge of the window, it will freeze the computer every time in Firefox and sometimes in IE. BUT now, after a few seconds, the machine will reset itself. Before the BIOS update, I had to shut the machine off with the switch on the front of the case. After the BIOS update the computer couldn't find the video card. I restarted it again and then it found the card. I downloaded the latest drivers for the video card and installed them but it didn't help. The video card is an Nvidia GeForce 8500GT, about five years old. Could it be the problem?

I looked at the Event logs but I have no idea what they are saying. I did get a pop up window once that said:

Windows recovered from a serious shutdown Problem event name - Blue screen OS version - 6.1.7601.2.1.0.256.1 Locale ID - 1033 Then more information that I have no idea about.

I'm thinking that this problem isn't about Firefox??????

Can you post your logs from Windows Event Viewer?

Windows logs are known to be long so to avoid overfilling the text area (it's limited to a certain number of characters), can you copy/paste your log(s) into http://pastebin.mozilla.org/ then share the link?

Moses, the Event Viewer has a ton of information. Is there a particular section of it that you need? Or is there a way to send you the entire report without trying to copy all of it? I did get this popup window after the last crash/restart:

WINDOWS RECOVERED FROM A SERIOUS SHUTDOWN Problem signature:

 Problem Event Name:	BlueScreen
 OS Version:	6.1.7601.2.1.0.256.1
 Locale ID:	1033

Are there reports that mention a specific file or component as the cause?

If that isn't the case then it is probably not possible to use these event reports.

more options

Try to open C:\Windows\Minidump\060614-19827-01.dmp with a TEXT viewer, like Notepad. What does it look like?

Then do the same with C:\Users\Rick\AppData\Local\Temp\WER-34601-0.sysdata.xml
