I don't see the Java plugin and therefore don't have way of enabling it in Firefox. Can someone suggest a fix?

I'm using Firefox 3.6.13 on Centos 5.5 linux. I just installed the Java Run Time environment using the instructions on Oracles Java download site. The browser, however, does not show the plugin in the plugins menu, even though I created a link to libjavaplugin_oji.so in the /usr/lib/mozilla/plugins directory. I can't seem to find any information on this problem in any of the FAQs/websites.
