Can't choose a file to save the downloads

In preferences menu, I used to see that desktop was selected as a location which the downloads will be saved in. But recently, I couldn't download some stuff. The download pop up didn't show up. I looked at the preference, and the location for downloads was blank. I clicked "choose" but nothings pops up for me to choose a file or location. And I tried to type in the blank space but I can't
