Firefox won't connect to the internet

Using Windows 7. I have been running firefox for years. 3 weeks ago firefox wouldn't connect to the internet. Tab was saying 'forbinder...' in danish, that would translate into 'connecting...'. Nothing happened. No matter which website I tried to access, or which tab. Other browsers worked fine. I assumed an automatic update had gone wrong. I uninstalled, and got a fresh Firefox. It worked, and it had kept all my settings. Then some time after, I had the same issue. Could not connect. I used windows uninstall and installed a new copy. Worked. But then it happened again. Forth time around I decided to get rid of the mess. I used windows 'remove program'. I deleted the folder C:\Program Files (x86)\Mozilla Firefox, the %APPDATA% roaming profile data also. And then did a fresh install. However, I am back to my old problem. I can't get thorugh to the internet. It is saying 'connecting', no matter which tab or website I use..

I found an issue related to an Nvidia firewall - I don't have that but other Nvidia software. I updated all to latest. Didn't work. I checked proxy settings, changed from system default to 'no proxy'. Checked if other browsers had different settings, which they didn't. So it didn't work. Then I tried messing with the Windows firewall, which is the only one running. When it didn't succeed I deleted firefox as recommended, to let it selfdefine at next startup. But windows firewall is apparantly not triggeded by firefox starting.

Help, please ;-)

Thank Flemming

hi, can you please see if uninstalling firefox 44 first and then installing the 64bit version from https://www.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/all/ does solve this issue for you?

Update. Starting firefox with plugins disabled in failsafe mode acutually works. It seems like my scratch of firefox didn't clean everything - some of those plugins look like some I installed. A change in the 'regular' firefox, to let all plugins 'ask' before starting, doesn't make the regular firefox connect to the internet. Making all plugins into 'never activate' doesn't let firefox on to internet either.

Are you talking about Firefox Safe Mode?

Safe Mode is a troubleshooting mode that temporarily turns off hardware acceleration, resets some settings, and disables add-ons (extensions and themes). If the problem goes away, that tells us one thing. If it does not, that tells us something else.

Type about:support in the address bar and press Enter. Under the main banner, press the button; Copy Text To Clipboard.. Then in the reply box at the bottom of this page, do a right click in the box and select Paste. This will show us your system details. No Personal Information Is Collected.

I'm using a danish firefox, so I'll try to translate menu-titles, but I go to settings and select '?', that gives an option to 'restart with additions deactivated'. When I select that, it restarts and prompts to go into 'Start in failsafe condition'. That was the one I was using.

I have this same problem, i had to downgrade to older version of firefox .

Nothing wrong with that. I didn't upgrade 43 until .0.4 came out. Install an older version of Firefox {web link}

Did you want the preferences page to also open?

You have one add-on. Please disable it, then restart Firefox

If there is still a problem,

Type about:addons<enter> in the address bar to open the Add-ons Manager. Hot key; <Control>(Mac=<Command>) <Shift> A)

On the left side of the page, select Appearance. Then select Default.

Type about:preferences#advanced<Enter> in the address bar.

Under Advanced, Select General. Look for and turn off Use Hardware Acceleration.

Poke around safe web sites. Are there any problems?

My startpage should be a clean google. I don't know where about:preferences came into play.

When I browse my addons, there is only one (Logitech Setpoint) that is deactivated. I forgot to state that when I initially saw this problem, the first thing I did was to disable all add-ons, which didn't help initially. The appearence is set to standard, which is the only option available (probably danish for default - btw it's annoying firefox runs in danish, in particular when having problems when googling. My Windows is English for the same reason). I can't get rid of the add-on. I removed hardware acceleration and restarted (the setpoint add-on still present but de-activated). Still didn't work.

BUT - I tried to restart firefox with add-ons disabeled (AS I did yesterday, starting out finding the '?' menu. And when restarted it asks me if I want to start in 'failsafe mode' or to 'reset firefox'. I chose the failsafe yesterday, today I used 'reset firefox'. That worked. Now I can connect to the net. Let's see how long it takes before it messes up again :-). By the way my 'Logitech setpoint' add-on still shows up deactivated. Can't seem to rid of that thing.

more options

well - that wasn't long. Back where I started 'connecting'

more options

Got rid of the setpoint add-on by uninstalling the logitech setpoint software. So now my add-ons are clean. It still doesn't work, though.

Is there a more complete way of wiping firefox and starting fro scratch than the one I outlined (which is basically https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/uninstall-firefox-from-your-computer) ?

Still doesn't work with hardware accelleration turned off (I did state that above also, but message apparently drowned in the mess)

hi, can you please see if uninstalling firefox 44 first and then installing the 64bit version from https://www.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/all/ does solve this issue for you?

more options

hi, that worked. After uninstall I installed as requested. It worked. Shut it down. Started. Still worked. Did that a couple of times. Then booted. Still worked, I have installed add-ons and plugins, and it still works... Booted - still works. Thanks - but I assume the bug is still in the Danish Firefox. I can live without that, but is there anything you need from me to maybe solve the issue for other users ? Thanks Flemming

64bit builds didn't seem affected by this page loading issue at all.we hope to address the issue in 32bit-builds as well with another update within the next days.
