How can I eliminate the browser redirecting my Google selection to a bogus site. It's happening extremely frequently.

Posted

When I'm on the internet w/ Mozilla Firefox 3.6.13 as my browser, I'm experiencing three weird things that I haven't seen before: 1. Loud obnoxious ads play even if I'm on a site w/ no ads, 2. the top choice on a google search automatically 'reroutes' to a bogus page, and 3. I'm getting a never ending "You just won a $1000 gift certificate from Walmart' pop-up no matter what site I'm on. Have cleared cache, cleared cookies, cleared history, run antivirus "Malware" program etc, and nothing is able to eliminate this obnoxious stuff.

The problem is a Trojan. I had this problem and tried just about everything including Malwarebytes, CCleaner, Adaware and several suggestions from various forums. Nothing worked and none of the virus scan software found the issue. Finally I found, and tried, Hitman Pro that I downloaded from CNET.com. That program finally found the Trojan. It pegged "Attribg.dll" as the culprit. I told it to delete it and I no longer have the issue of my Google search links being redirected!

This type of behaviour is caused by malware. This link may help - http://deletemalware.blogspot.com/2010/02/remove-google-redirect-virus.html

You can also try running several malware scanners. It is best to run several as each will pick up things that the others miss. Some scanners you can try are:

If the above malware scanners do not find any malware or can not clear it, you should consider posting in one of these forums for specialized malware removal help:

Tony, very helpful, thank you!! I had run Malwarebytes numerous times over past couple weeks and that didn't identify *any* malware. So, per your suggestion, I downloaded free SUPERAntiSpyware (SAS) and also uninstalled Mozilla. SAS found 74 cases of malware! I'm going now to reboot and hope this solves the redirect problem and the other 2 problems. Thank you SO much for your quick help!

Update: Although SAS found 74 malware, it still didn't solve the redirect problem or the obnoxious audio programs that overplay on almost any website I go to...

back to the drawing board, but thank you again for the terrific resource links.
