Firefox 10, top issues, ESR and you!

There may be an issue where the caret (the bar that marks where you're typing, also called the cursor) disappears so you can't tell where you're typing.

Some users reported that clearing the cache makes it reappear.

  2. A edgy behavior found by the Operations team around Sync:

Users running a Farmville Auto-clicker addon are generating loads of history visits (the ones generated by the add-on). After a little while, Sync breaks. (when they hit the 500k entries, aprox.)

There's a workaround: Preferences -> Sync, uncheck History. Hit Ok. Sync. And then go back to Preferences -> Sync and check History back.

Not many users have reported it but it's a known thing and there's no good solution yet.

    Should we document it?

  3. A quick status update: Current release status: updates are turned off. Next checkpoint: Tuesday afternoon. If any of the following bugs warrants a chemspill, then we'll wait for the chemspill before releasing Firefox 10 fully.

    • Currently, drivers are tracking one big issue:
      • There's an increase in startup crashes but the signature reproduces best in a non-startup scenario. Crashstats won't give me a link or numbers right now but the thinking is that some combination of extensions is hitting this crash in Firefox 10. (bug 724129)
    • There's also work going on with the following issues:
      • Startup crash (bug 718389). The summary on that bug may be wrong and this is not necessarily a malware crash but that's all we know.
      • Crash with the following video drivers: AMD Radeon HD 6xxx (windows). We may need to blocklist the driver but current advice is to just ask users to turn off HWA. It's not a major crash. (bug 700288)
    • We are looking for info for the following as well:
      • Loss of cursor. As noted above, this seems to be more common on Firefox 10 (bug 721239).
      • Broken enter key in location bar caused by AVG Safe search extension. We have numerous reports on SUMO but QA can't reproduce. We should ask everyone to update AVG to see if that fixes.
      • Loss of add-ons from the add-ons manager. Filed as bug 723238 but probably bug 671894. We'd like to ask users for either a copy of the extension files (extensions.sqlite) but failing that, just knowing a) what version of Firefox they updated from b) if they have any antivirus or security software.
      • Any startup crashes where the crash reporter doesn't show.

Startup crash (bug 718389). The summary on that bug may be wrong and this is not necessarily a malware crash but that's all we know.

I removed the reference to malware as we don't know the proportion.

6xxx is written to have a short summary, but it only impacts AMD Radeon HD 6290/6300/6310/6320.

Presumably you have already trawled sumo, and are only after new reports. On existing thread is /questions/917515

Is this a new bug for Firefox 10? Bug 650166 goes back to Firefox 4 and its duplicate bug 705468 reports the same issue in Firefox 8. Both report startup crashes where the crash reporter almost never shows up (workaround is to disable HW acceleration).

  8. We have two new (known) startup crashes in Firefox 10 with significant volume. However, there's some speculation that they may underestimate because a bunch of crashes may not even trigger the crash reporter.

I tried searching for bug 718939 and bug 721239 on Bugzilla but i get "Zarro Boogs found" for both bug searches.

Are these bug still there ??

Yes it is still there. I will follow Cheng's protocol of not posting links (Although imho they are fine here in the contributors sector, it is the users AAQ forum where they are likely to result in bug spam)

Bug 718939 - Java applet causes text entry fields to become semi-unresponsive

When searching bugzilla, you don't need to search for the word "bug". :)

  13. And I was wrong about the loss of cursor thing... after actually reproducing the bug in 718939, it doesn't look like the loss of cursor thing. Sorry about the false alarm.

  14. Cheng,
Suggestion: may it help to keep the first post of this stiky updated by making edits.

Add some sort of contents table briefly listing significant posts &/0r make inline edits to update it.

The thread is getting long, and many visitors are not going to read all the posts. For instance where you mention the current release plan add a comment regarding the new 10.0.1 release and links to posts/threads mentioning that e.g.

Update 9th Feb release plan changed

  15. Sounds good. I'll keep that in mind for the next set of updates (after my meetings today).

In the meantime, mods should feel free to update my initial post with any relevant information.

  16. On Bug 718939 - Java applet causes text entry fields to become semi-unresponsive ... I got stung by this bug today and it's a killer. You can't even click on a link in the Bookmarks Toolbar or type into the Location Bar when this hits. The workaround (from the bug report) is to minimize/maximize or resize the window up or down.

I did edit the original post in this thread to add information on the fixes planned for Firefox 10.0.1, which include the Java bug.

  17. Added a few new top issues to the list (AVG, Norton, Real player video download and the problem with HTTPs). Also, put the latest news at the top. Hope that helps.
