Can you tell me which extensions you have? Go to Help > Troubleshooting Info and copy and paste the extensions bit here.
Also, how are you trying to open a new tab? Ctrl-T? + in the tab bar? Right click, New tab or from the File menu?

In the tab bar
Does any of these two methods for opening a new tab work?
- Select "File" from the Firefox menu and then select "New Tab"
- Press Ctrl+T on your keyboard
I had this problem, but the following advises a cause and fix (remove Ask toolbar) https://support.mozilla.com/hy-AM/questions/783702
Works fine now.
Please show me how to remove the Ask toolbar
- In the Tools menu select Add-ons to open the add-ons manager.
- In the Add-ons manager select the Extensions panel
- In the list of Extensions click on Ask Toolbar, then click the Uninstall button
- Restart Firefox and the Ask toolbar will be uninstalled.
That works, thanks.
if you go to help and then trouble shooting information it opens up a new tab...unorthodox but it works
