since upgrading to firefox 20, I have noticed that after about a half hour of use, the browser starts using up all 1.23 GB of available RAM on my system. when this happens, my system becomes frozen (the clock stops) and I usually have to do a cold reboot. with chrome, when memory gets dangerously low, I can free up more ram by closing unused tabs, but closing tabs with firefox doesn't do any good! what can I do to fix the issue?

Before I changed internet service providers, I could type my search queries into the url bar and receive search results from Google. After I switched ISPs, my queries typed into the url bar are put into my new ISP's horrible search engine. How do I change it back?
I've already tried going to about:config and changing the value of the keyword.URL preference to "http://www.google.com/search?ie=UTF-8&oe=UTF-8&q=" but that didn't fix my problem.
New information since creation of the post:
My ISP is Optimum. I have opted out of DNS Assistance and still have seen no change.
When my search term is two words or more, I am directed to Google search results. If my search term is only one word, however, I am still directed to Optimum's search results.

MacBook Pro 8,2 with OS X 10.6.8 4GB RAM 2GH Core i7 Firefox 20.0 Shockwave Flash 11.7.700.169 Hardware acceleration enabled. Flash player plugin often starts at 40% to 60% of CPU but sometimes slowly builds up to where Activity Monitor is showing close to or even over 100% of CPU effort. Processors heat up and fans run at over 4,000 RPM. Video begins to drop frames and may eventually stop. Only solution (but not good) seems to be to either kill (force-quit) the Shockwave process or quit/reopen Firefox. I suspect there may be other things using the Shockwave process elsewhere on the web page and/or on other tabs that I can't find. (Running Shockwave player in Safari seems to use much less CPU effort. Even when I play two full HD videos at the same time, it only uses 60% to 80% of CPU in Safari.) Is there another video player that I can use in place of Shockwave Flash?

I have Firefox 20 and OS X 10.6.8. And no matter how many times I've downloaded and installed Flash - successfully, it's telling me (it lies!) - it doesn't show up in my FF add-ons list. The icon with the curved arrow appears in my Apps, but clicking on it gets only the Install app. After downloading (and closing the browser), I've tried both opening it and saving it to HD, with no effect. It's just not there.
After about three repeated downloads/installations - all of which got me only the Install app - I uninstalled all of them and tried again. No luck, but the Shockwave plug-in disappeared from my add-ons list. I did the download/install from both a website with a video I wanted to see that told me I needed the latest version of Flashplayer and "click here" and from the Adobe site itself. No luck. When I go back to that website video, all I get is the message that I need Flashplayer and "click here" to download it.
When I check the status of my add-ons, Flash isn't there either. There are only three plug-ins I have enabled: Adobe Acrobat NPAPI Plug-in Version 10.1.6, Google Earth 7.0 (I almost never use it), and Java Applet 13.9.5. The status report tells me that Adobe Acrobat NPAPI Plug-in Version 10.1.6 and Google Earth 7.0 are "unknown" plug-ins with status "unknown". The ONLY other plug-in I have enabled is Java Applet 13.9.5 , and the status of that is "up to date".
None of the various troubleshooting processes have helped, and I've tried them all.

Im going insane with the spinning beachball on mac when using Firefox v21.
It happens several times per minute with something as simple as choosing the next field on a page or even scrolling down the page using the scroller on the right hand of the page.
Im on a laptop which has os 10.6.8 installed and the laptop has 8gig of ram and a 2.8ghz intel core 2 duo processor.
On previous versions of Firefox I used to get "unresponsive script" warnings with the option to stop it. These warnings would pop up and never give the option to "always stop an unresponsive script AND never take total control of my computer trying to get the script to respond" There is no option to block the script on the site its coming from.
I did have a block script plug in but no sites work properly if java script isnt enabled.
With Firefox21 I dont get these pop up warnings any more.
I have a lot of tabs open and when the spinning beach ball happens too often I quit firefox and open it again. It remembers my tabs but doesnt load till I click on the tab.
Despite this Firefox will start stalling and showing the beachball spinning only after a few new pages are opened.
It is enfuriating and I dont consider the software to be working properly.
Im wondering has something gottten corrupted in the System Library when firefox installs or if there is a compatability problem with versions of Firefox, my OS10.6.8, Java, Flash?
I can only look at one tab at a time - I WOULD LOVE IF THERE WAS AN OPTION TO
"NOT GIVE ANY RESOURCES TO OTHER TABS WHICH ARENT BEING VIEWED"
I used to use a plug in called Pause All Tabs which was brilliant and gave me back control of my computer. I cant get it for FF21
So what can I do? Use Chrome instead?

Hello,
Please help me resolve this, it is driving me mad!
I've got this strange redirect Issie. I'm running Mac OSX 10.6.8 with Firebox 19.
When I click a link on random sites it redirects me to an irrelevant URL + advertising: linkbucks.com... [followed by the adress of the intenended site]
This occurs when leaving the page you are on (e.g. changing page a site). It happens on any site and appears to be random.
Is this a virus/trojan? Or an attack on the browser? How can I get rid of it?
Thank you very much.
Ben

I am over it! This has been happening with all versions so far this year.
I am currently running Firefox 19.0.2 for Mac on a MacBook6,1; Intel Core 2 Duo; 8Gig RAM; Mac OS X 10.6.8; Darwin 10.8.0
Firefox with default 'scheme', Java 13.9.3 and Flash 11.6.602.180 (all current updates), Adblock Plus2.2.3, Adblock Plus Pop-up Addon 0.7, English (Australian) Dictionary 2.1.2, Easy Youtube Video Downloader 6.8
If Mozilla do not get there act together and fix this issue I will be going to Chrome or some other browser. You are killing what was a good product and losing loyal users.
It is particularly noticeable on Facebook - but happens on news and other sites as well.

Hello,
As we all know, pdf.js is now implemented in firefox. I want to start by saying I think it WILL be a great thing.
While it WILL a great thing, right now it's absolutely horrid. We run a local paper (about 9,000 papers per week...) and post our issues online every week. When viewing our (and many other's) PDFs online in Safari, they look great. In Firefox however, it is absolute nonsense. Images don't render right leaving big blurry boxes instead. Type-faces are swapped around, spacing is off, things overlap and other problems.
I would like to know if there is any way (whether it be an html tag or some other method) of disabling all of our PDFs from ever opening in Firefox's built in viewer? Our audience will not realize that Firefox is making our hard work look like a scrambled mess and not us.
Any help would be great. Also, if there are some very minor tweaks we could use to make our PDFs render better in Firefox we would consider that. Although in all honesty that would be absolute bullshit, changing our methods to accommodate a plugin that should still be in alpha or beta stages.

I have been instructed to: "When you open Firefox up in the left hand corner there is a drop down box that says "Firefox". Click on this and go to add-ons a new page will open with tabs on the side.
Click on ADD-ONS, use ADD-ON Manager...."
That does not happen that way. (I am on Firefox 19.0 for MAC.)
When I click on Firefox (left hand corner at top of screen) "ADD-ONS" does NOT appear.
I get "preferences" and "services" plus, of course ABOUT/HIDE/SHOW/QUIT choices.
Running through ALL choices in PREFERENCES (which was not included as a step in your description) I find NO WAY to "deal with" ADD-ONS in General, Security, Privacy or Advanced.
"services" says only NO SERVICES APPLY"
I KNOW that I have an "ADD-ON Manager" I can open that. The ADD-ON that I need to REMOVE/Uninstall/Disable does NOT show there.
It is an ICON on the lowest level of my toolbars showing above my window. Whether this is an awesome bar, or any other specially named bar I can't tell you, but: LOWEST section.
This creepy ADD-ON (that I never personally installed) is called PRICEGONG - and it is now opening up a pop-up on all my eBay pages and elsewhere -trying to sell me things.
It is wasting SO much of my time and I need to get it gone. WHAT do I do now? The PRICEGONG company has explanation of what to do to uninstall, but (no surprise) THEIR instructions/steps do not match reality either. RESULT: I can't get RID of this thing and am wasting huge amounts of time now with it. WHAT CAN I DO?

I have "accept cookies from sites" and "ask me every time" set on FF 20. When I navigate to certain sites, I select "deny" cookies and "use my choice for every cookie", yet I am presented with multiple queries asking me if I want to accept cookies for the site. Apple.com, for instance, just asked me 30 times if I wanted to accept cookies from the site, even though I marked "use my choice for every cookie."
Sometimes FF freezes up and I have to force quit it to deal with the onslaught. This has been a problem for years now, and is very frustrating. Is someone working on fixing it?
