Hi i just installed firefox on my compuer wich has windows 8.1 and i was suprised that youtube asked for adobe flash player upgrade.

I just came from internet explorer and google chrome and i never had to install or upgrade any adobe flash player on any of those browsers in order for youtube to work.

And i think it is becouse adobe shockwave player 11.6 came with windows 8/8.1 .

Anyway i wanted youtube to work with firefox sbut i did not want to click on the link that was on youtube.com becouse i have heard its better to download stuff like this directly from the program makers website.

So i went to www.adobe.com and downloaded the flash player, but when trying to install it it did not work i saw it was running in the task manager for a short while then it disappeared and when going on youtube it was the same upgrade your adobe flash player message.

So i downloaded it from there with firefox to see if it would make any difference but it did not work either!. Then i got a bit paranoid when i saw that the file had not the same name as the file from www.adobe.com webpage.

The name of the file was fp_pl_pfs_installer.exe and came from http://download.macromedia.com The file from adobes site is named (install_flashplayer11x32_mssa_aaa_aih.exe)

Anyhow i removed the file fp_pl_pfs_installer.exe from macromedia.com being afraid that i had just downloaded a virus.

After a while i decided to try again the first original file i downloaded from www.adobe.com and the installation came through weirdly enough and youtube started working.

So now i wonder if this second file fp_pl_pfs_installer.exe from http://download.macromedia.com that i downloaded and tried to install from youtube with help from firefox is a legit file and adress? .

It never got installed and i am a bit afraid that that file download was some fake adobe stuff and when trying to run it and not working it realsed some virus/malware.

Maybe you guys and girls know something about this.

Ps: Also why is firefox the only browser needing this adobe flash player install? does not adobe shockwave player 11.6 work with it it? it seems to work with all the other browsers?.

Very thankfull for Answers /krister.

Chosen solution

Internet Explorer has a separate version of Flash Player from Firefox. You must install Flash Player for Firefox if you want Flash content to work in Firefox (and a handful of other browsers, like Seamonkey and Opera).

Macromedia was the name of the company that made Flash. It was bought by Adobe in late 2005. Adobe still maintains the macromedia.com domain for downloads and information.

ok i understand you sorry for the long post above i was a bit confused!

what is the main difference between the adobe shockwave player and adobe flash player ?

is shockwave more then just a flash ?

Becouse i am thinking of removing the adobe shockwave player that came pre loaded on the computer and just use adobe flash player instead.

not having two adobe players running.

Becouse the adobe flash player seems to be working with google chrome to.

is this a wise move?

the shockwave player is not needed for anything else in my system right?

Thanks for your answers and patience!. Cheers/krister.

Google Chrome comes with its own Pepper-based Flash Player plugin on Linux and Windows. IE uses the ActiveX version.

The average user now days will not likely need shockwave player unless you say use it for things like learning applications or play games online that uses it.

Flash Player (labeled "Shockwave Flash" inside the browser) and Shockwave Player (labeled "Shockwave for Director" inside the browser) are two different plug-ins that handle different content. The former is very popular, while the latter is more rarely used. You can find a comparison for developers below:

As I said above, you must keep Flash Player for Firefox installed if you want Flash content to work in Firefox. It's labeled "Adobe Flash Player 11 Plugin" in Control Panel — do not uninstall that one.

I was having this problem as well, did everything I could find on the net to try to resolve it, no help..... Adobe was at the latest version, then I realized what I had changed prior to the issue beginning. I had installed SPYBOT search and destroy.

I uninstalled SPYBOT, went back to Malwarebytes, problem gone......

Don't think that the problem is solved. I have Windows 8.1. Firefox keeps asking me to upgrade Adobe Flash Player. When I upgrade it, Firefox still keeps asking me for the upgrade. E.g. when trying to open http://speedcheck.vodafone.de/, the page says: "Dieser Service erfordert eine aktuellere Version des Adobe Flash Players. Bitte aktualisieren Sie ihre Software" = "This service requires a more recent version of Adobe Flash Player. Please update your software." So I do: I download Flash Player 12, version 12.0.0.70, from http://get.adobe.com/de/flashplayer/, file install_flashplayer12x32_ltr5x64d_awc_aih.exe. I install it, then restart Firefox: SAME PROBLEM! There is a basic incompatibility between Firefox 27.0.1 and Flash Player 12.0.0.70 !!! Please fix that bug. In Google Chrome, there's not any problem like this. Should I switch to Chrome? I'd prefer not to.

I think I found the solution now: The problem was: I had deactivated the "Shockwave Flash 12.0.0.70" add-on, for security reasons. Now I re-activated it - and the problem is gone: There's no more error message asking me to install the latest version of Adobe Flash Player. E.g. the speedcheck on http://speedcheck.vodafone.de/ runs fine now. The problem is the misleading error message: When the Shockwave Flash is deactivated, it causes the error message "You need to install the latest version of Adobe Flash Player" - which unfortunately is NOT the solution. Re-installing Adobe Flash Player won't help! The solution instead is just activating the "Shockwave Flash" plug-in. PROPOSAL: Whenever Shockwave Flash is deactivated, Firefox should issue a warning to the user: "Your Flash Player plug-in ("Shockwave Flash") is deactivated; for watching videos you should better re-activate it; upgrading Adobe Flash Player will NOT help." Hope that helps!

Firefox is a 32 bit application, so you need to install the 32 bit Flash player.
