For Windows 7 and earlier, application/x-mplayer2 content plays in the Windows Media Player plugin (download page). However, it doesn't mention Windows 8 compatibility. Have you tried that one? I didn't see a newer link in the support article: Play Windows Media files in Firefox with the Windows Media plugin.
