How come sites can add bookmarks for their own purpose in your browser's (FIREFOX 19.02) bookmarks toolbar without you akcnowledge this ?

Posted

Hello Firefox !

I remember in the early 1990s that malicious sites added icons and easily installed ads in your starting page, but to experience this in 2013 with an updated version of FIREFOX 19.02 is a big surprise !

I recently noticed that two sites were silently installed in my bookmarks toolbar I deleted them but who knows what they were doing while they were sitting there ?

Do a malware check with some malware scanning programs on the Windows computer.
Please scan with all programs because each program detects different malware.

Make sure that you update each program to get the latest version of their databases before doing a scan.

You can also do a check for a rootkit infection with TDSSKiller.

We are always working on blocking malicious applications from hijacking Firefox. Do you know the names of these bookmarks and perhaps how they got there (they usually come bundled with other software).

Please note that just a bookmark won't do anything to compromise your security, they are usually just there to try to increase ad revenue.
