why do my downloads pause when my iMac on sleep mode?

i have an iMac OS X 10.8.2

Sleep is a power-saving state that allows a computer to quickly resume full-power operation (typically within several seconds) when you want to start working again. Putting your computer into the sleep state is like pausing a DVD player—the computer immediately stops what it’s doing and is ready to start again when you want to resume working. So downloads stop because the hard drive stops.

Sorry for the very delayed response, i have been very busy! I assume you are on Windows 7??? OK, if you are on Windows 7 go to Start button>Control Panel>System and Security>Power Options and then on the left hand side click Change when the computer sleeps.
