by ideatoHello andyusfr, yes you can use a picture or photo as avatar, but remember "avatars" have low resolution, so it's a bit hard to see all the photos details.
you can seek in search engines also for avatars.
if you don't like an avatar, you can change it to another, or to default(a Delete link appears on the Edit Profile page next to the new avatar. If you click it, that will restore the default avatar)
