Under 'about:config', why are some options bold while others are not?

Posted

I am looking at the options under `about:config`. I notice that some options are bold and some are not. Does bold signify that those particular config options have been changed from the default value? If so, how did they get changed? I have not changed any settings within `about:config`.

See the following screenshot to illustrate my question:

about:config stores every preference in Firefox, so if anything has been changed from the default it will be bold. For example, when you first install Firefox is shows an infobar that shows your rights. If you read or close that bar, it changes the pref in about:config to make sure Firefox doesn't show it again. That pref (browser.rights.3.shown) will then be bold. The Same will be if you have a printer on your computer, Firefox will have the printer settings in about:config, and any other pref you've changed or Firefox has changed is in about:config

The bold options are just ones that have been changed from their default.

I haven't changed these options in about:config, and I see no way to change some of these options outside of about:config.

Any idea how they would get changed from the default?

There are also some prefs that are updated automatically such as the check for update prefs.
