For the last 3 months, I have had a major problem with Firefox taking forever to startup my home page. After the initial startup , all websites load fine. So here is what I have tried. I have cleared temp files, cache and etc... I have tried the dns prefetching. I have tried changing the value in the about config option. I have changed my profile to a clean new fresh one with no history or bookmarks. I have disabled plugins and restarted in safe mode. I have updated all existing plugins/ add ons.I have deinstalled and reinstalled Firefox ( I have the latest version) I have tried Pale Moon and Internet Explorer. Both are slow but Internet Explorer seems to be the fastest right now. I have done a restore point to a time before major updates when the problem first started. I have tried all changes recommended in the aboutconfig: option. I have scanned with numerous adware and antivirus programs and nothing turns up. I have contacted my service provider (ATT Uverse) and everything of course checks out on their end. I suspect there is something with their particular server they have me on because that is the only thing in common with the browsers. Any other suggestions?

philipp 5 months ago hello RelicHunter78, i'm not sure if it is related to the issue you're describing, but there are two different versions of adobe shockwave flash shown in your list of installed plugins (11.3 r300 & 11.5 r502 ), which can cause problems...
please see if the older flash is listed in the windows control panel & removable from there or else use the uninstaller provided on the adobe website to remove the old plugin: http://helpx.adobe.com/flash-player/kb/uninstall-flash-player-windows.html

RelicHunter78 5 months ago I have disabled the older version in my add on options but in my control panel for windows there is only the active x flash player and flash player plug in installed. The active x is for internet explorer and the other I believe is for non IE browsers. So there are two different versions in my control panel but no duplicates of the same. I disabled the r300 assuming it's the older version and left the r502. I will give it some time to see if this has any affect and will post a reply . Thanks

RelicHunter78 5 months ago Unfortunately, this wasn't the problem. Thanks for the suggestion though.

cor-el 5 months ago A possible cause is security software (firewall,anti-virus) that blocks or restricts Firefox or the plugin-container process without informing you, possibly after detecting changes (update) to the Firefox program.
Remove all rules for Firefox and the plugin-container from the permissions list in the firewall and let your firewall ask again for permission to get full unrestricted access to internet for Firefox and the plugin-container process and the updater process.

RelicHunter78 5 months ago I tried your suggestion and firefox.exe was not on the firewall's allowed programs list. So I added it and thought this fixed it. The first couple of times it was back to normal speed. Then, it started back to what it has been lately. It's taking 30 seconds to load first page. I have even tried changing homepages and it's like this on any homepage I designate. I have had my PC professionally inspected every which way and my PC is clean and gets a grade A in health. Really baffled right now.

meganos 3 months ago Easy. Uninstall Hola Unblocker or something like that.
-
RelicHunter78 3 months ago I don't have Hola Unblocker installed. I am not really sure what that is but it's not currently installed on my pc.
-
meganos 3 months ago I had the same problem, i removed the extension called hola unblocker and it helped
-
RelicHunter78 3 months ago I have disabled every extension I have and have totally removed firefox and reinstalled it and that didn't work either.
-
ideato 3 months ago Hello RelicHunter78, can you provide us your homepage(the one with the problem)?
thank you
-
RelicHunter78 3 months ago I have tried over 100 homepages, all homepages do the same thing. If my browser sets closed or not in use for over 15 to 20 minutes it takes too long to reopen. I started leaving my browser open instead of closing it everytime I get off. That doesn't help because when I refresh my brower to bring the page backup , it does the same thing. It still takes a long time for the page to start backup.

ideato 3 months ago Do you have in about:config the cache enable ?
- browser.cache.check_doc_frequency to default 3 ? make it 2
thanks again -
meganos 3 months ago And uninstall some programs like netflix, or apps that makes your internet "faster"
-
cor-el 3 months ago Try to boot the computer in Windows Safe mode with network support (press F8 on the boot screen) as a test to see if that helps.
-
RelicHunter78 3 months ago I have tried safe mode, no change
-
RelicHunter78 3 months ago I checked all my browser settings with ones listed or above or suggested, the only one I had to change was Browser.cache.check_doc_frequency to value 2. No difference yet.

RelicHunter78 3 months ago I don't have any netflix add ons or extensions installed. I only have necessary plug ins installed. I have turned off all add ons and restarted so this issue is not related to an add on, plug in or extension. I also can rule out my dsl provider as I have hooked my pc up to other family members connections with the same provider on the same server and it did the same thing, However their pc has no issue. I have taken my pc to 3 technicians and there are no problems they can find with my registry or any infections or spyware. The PC does the same thing on their connections. All hardware passes every test they can throw at it. I have tried other browsers and reinstalling this one as well and the same thing happens. This really is mind boggling. I have ATT/uverse beta 6.0. There should be no delay in starting up my browser. After startup, it works great no problems but the speed starting up is on par with old fashioned dial up right now. I have 3 gigs of ram available and I have 85 percent capacity left on hard drive , processor speed of 3.4 with dual core processor. Makes no sense at all.

meganos 3 months ago Format your PC and it should help :)
-
RelicHunter78 3 months ago I don't think reformatting is the route to go because if it is indeed a server issue , I will be right back where I started with the pain of reinstalling everything again added on top. I have seen numerous people online have had this issue as well but no solutions they have tried have worked either.
-
ideato 3 months ago Did you try cor-el's reply to : boot the computer in Windows Safe mode, not firefox in safe mode ?
-
RelicHunter78 3 months ago Yes, safe mode doesn't change anything
-
RelicHunter78 3 months ago The weird thing is, if I get on the computer within 15 minutes or so after getting off of it, it will open back up fine. If I do not use the PC after 15 minutes or so, my browser takes forever to establish connection back to the server or connect online.
-
RelicHunter78 3 months ago I have tried safe mode in firefox and safe mode in PC
-
meganos 3 months ago Maybe is something wrong with your wifi or ethernet adapter ? Update it from windows update
Or try to change the user agent, install https://addons.mozilla.org/ja/firefox/addon/configuration-mania-4420/ configuration mania and find user agent and change for something else
-
RelicHunter78 3 months ago Diagnostic test performed on ethernet adapter tests fine. No updates found. Ethernet connections work great. It's initially opening up the browser after PC has set idle for around 15 minutes or so. It seems to be a problem with att server talking and establishing connection through initial traffic after a period of no traffic or use by the user.

firefoxuser67 1 week ago I have the same problem and tried most of the above without result.
When I log in in safe mode, Firefox starts immediately - no delay at all. Does this signify something in the trouble shooting process?
-
RelicHunter78 1 week ago I tried the safe mode approach, unfortunately it did not work for me. When add ons were disabled due to safe mode, firefox didn't respond well at all once online, In fact is was worse than the slow initial opening problem that I am having. Maybe you're on to something with yours. The one thing that I can't figure out is that if I close firefox and then immediately open it within a couple of minutes, it comes right back up. If it sits longer than 5 minutes after I have closed it , it takes forever to reopen. The first two pages I visit (any of them..including my home page startup) take forever and a day to connect.

cor-el 1 week ago Do a clean reinstall and delete the Firefox program folder before (re)installing a fresh copy of the current Firefox release.
Download a fresh Firefox copy and save the file to the desktop.
- Firefox 21.0: http://www.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/all.html
Uninstall your current Firefox version, if possible, to cleanup the Windows registry and settings in security software.
- Do NOT remove personal data when you uninstall your current Firefox version, because all profile folders will be removed and you will lose all personal data like bookmarks and passwords from profiles of other Firefox versions.
Remove the Firefox program folder before installing that newly downloaded copy of the Firefox installer.
- (32 bit Windows) "C:\Program Files\Mozilla Firefox\"
- (64 bit Windows) "C:\Program Files (x86)\Mozilla Firefox\"
- It is important to delete the Firefox program folder to remove all the files and make sure that there are no problems with files that were leftover after uninstalling.
Your bookmarks and other personal data are stored in the Firefox profile folder and won't be affected by an uninstall and (re)install, but make sure that "remove personal data" is NOT selected when you uninstall Firefox.
If you keep having problems then also create a new profile.

RelicHunter78 1 week ago I will try this, however I believe it is going to be a problem with my DNS. Att uverse repeatedly says everything on their end is ok but they are notorious for having issues like this on their end. The reason I believe this is because I have tried browsers such as opera , google, and internet explorer and all have the same issue on startup. I know for sure that it is not my pc. It has been thoroughly checked from top to bottom by multiple professionals.
-
philipp 1 week ago if you suspect it's an issue with your ISP's dns servers, you can also use a different dns server, like the one google is providing: https://developers.google.com/speed/public-dns/
-
RelicHunter78 1 week ago Unfortunately, ATT Uverse does not allow the changing of primary or secondary DNS on their 2 wire routers. I believe I will buy a secondary router to put behind it and configure the new one to run on open DNS. This will allow me to work around those little loopholes as the 2 wire will be basically my modem then. This seems to have worked for others out there.
-
philipp 1 week ago normally you can set the DNS servers on the level of the operating system (i don't think that there's anything ATT could do against that) - this is explained in detail in the configuration instructions at google's page from above.
-
RelicHunter78 1 week ago I have to log in to my uverse ip address to change the settings, once I do that no change in the dns name/ address is allowed. I can't change the value or anything. It will not let you type anything there, I can't change it in the control panel because it's fixed as to the settings per the 2 wire box. This is a known issue with uverse, and customers with the 2 wire such as me have tried this. The secondary router solves this.
