why did firefox start in safemode, was it because of java hack news?

It is not uncommon for Java to be implicated in security problems, and java probably is mostly not essential to ordinary browsing.

Firefox will not have done anything itself to force you into safe-mode.

Unless you have modifie the shortcut you use for Firefox uses when it starts up, it should rstrt in ordinary mode not safe-mode when you close down and restart Firefox
