Firefox crashes when going on Facebook.

Posted

I use Firefox on a Mac (Snow Leopard) and I recently updated Firefox to version 18.0. After I updated, Firefox will freeze everytime I go on Facebook and I would have to force quit it. One thing I noticed is that it crashes when almost everything is loaded but the chat. Does anyone know how to fix this?

I am also having this problem, and I disabled all add-ons, and Facebook still crashes it.

To be clear - when I crash, Firefox freezes completely. The 'we're sorry, Firefox has crashed, do you want to submit a bug report?' window never pops up. So if that's necessary to send a crash report, this won't get reported.

We're sorry to hear that your Firefox seems to be crashing. Please perform the following steps to give us a crash report ID that helps us find out more about the cause of the crash.

  1. Enter about:crashes in the Firefox location bar (that's where you enter your website names) and press Enter. You should now see a list of submitted crash reports.
  2. Copy the most recent 5 report IDs that you see in the crash report window and paste them into your forum response.

Thanks in advance for your help!

More information and further troubleshooting steps can be found in the Firefox crashes - Troubleshoot, prevent and get help fixing crashes article.

No problem, Walkier. I wish that page had a simple copy button. *Sigh*

I fixed up your crash reports with links to where they are supposed to be but unfortunately they don't exist yet. Firefox has not submitted them yet.

Sometimes they aren't sent due to internet connection problems or if they currently receiving too many crash reports they put yours on hold.

To activate your crash reports, could you go back to about:crashes and click on each crash report? Clicking on each report once is enough to send the crash report.

A new tab will open and say something about your crash report is processing, etc, etc. You can close any tab that says that. And after about 5 minutes or less your report will be processed and we can all read them using the links above.

Sorry for the extra work.

Ah! Good eye! Back in the day the codes didn't used to change, so I guess they do now. Good thinking, thanks for the new codes.

After looking at your report, I see there's a bug filed about Facebook crashing with Firefox and it's being investigated. But at the moment no one knows why this is happening. :/

I'm thinking it could be one of your addons. If it wouldn't bother you too much I was thinking you could disable all your addons and try surfing Facebook for a few hours or even a whole day or two to see if things dramatically improve and you don't crash anymore.

To disable all addons:
Firefox button > Help > Restart with Add-ons disabled

Things like Flash player, Silverlight and Java won't be disabled as those are considered plugins. So you'll be able to watch flash videos & play java games.

And if that solves the crashes, then you'll have to enable each addon one at a time, while visiting Facebook until you find the addon that you enable that causes Firefox to crash on Facebook.

If you narrow down which addon is causing the crashes, post it here so we can let everyone know.

If anyone is experiencing this crash (their stack's say "Firefox 18.0 Crash Report [@ strlen | mozilla::plugins::PluginModuleChild::Init ] " at the top of the page) I'd love to be in contact with you to figure out what's going on here. Please PM me.

I started Firefox without Add-ons (Safe Mode) but when I go on Facebook it still crashes. Maybe its Flash because there a recent update for that too. I'm not sure but here is the crash report for going on Facebook in Safe Mode.

Those reports do not seem to have been submitted.

Do you have any crash reports with a bp- prefix?

Those are hangs (not responding) issues from a plugin, possibly Flash.

You can check for problems caused by recent Flash updates and try these:

  • disable a possible RealPlayer Browser Record Plugin extension for Firefox and update the RealPlayer if installed
  • disable protected mode in Flash 11.3 and later
  • disable hardware acceleration in the Flash plugin

You were right, it was a plug-in. It wasn't Flash, it was my Java. Installed the update and am back up and running. Thanks for pointing me in the right direction. Have a great night!

As an FYI.

I tried Facebook in Google Chrome on my iMac and Chrome crashes. I tried Safari and it works fine.

I installed Java 7, Update 10 and now Facebook works in Firefox, and has appeared to resolve the issue in Chrome.

I sounds like it was an issue with Java as suggested above.

Note that Oracle has released a Java 7 Update 11 to address security vulnerabilities and you should update to that version.
