Firefox will not import HTML bookmark file.

Posted

Just updated from XP to windows 7. I exported bookmarks from Firefox and have tried to import them. When I push the open bottom in the import dialog box after selecting the html file the box goes away but no bookmarks are imported. Anyone have a solution for this?

Thanks,

Richard

So far, I haven't heard that Firefox couldn't (or wouldn't!) import its own HTML bookmarks export. However, when imported, the entire set is placed in a folder rather than appearing on the main bookmarks menu. Can you find a folder named something like "imported bookmarks" either on the bookmarks menu or on the bookmarks toolbar?

If they really are nowhere to be found, do you have access to a backup of your old user folder (C:\Documents and Settings\YourUsername\)? There should be bookmarks backups buried in there that we can extract.

The Bookmark HTML file is intact and can be opened with Firefox but doesn't show when I import it. I have re-installed Firefox 18.0.1 and started it after a reset, nothing changes.

Do I need to remove my profile?

I wouldn't remove your profile if you have spent any appreciable amount of time customizing it. You can create a second profile for testing to see whether the file will import there. This article has the steps:

Use the Profile Manager to create and remove Firefox profiles

You can use the profile manager to switch between profiles. If the import works in the first profile, you can create an extra "backup" which uses an alternate format (.json) which you might be able to restore successfully to your main profile. Please note that the restoration process is a complete replacement for any existing bookmarks.

Make sure the the HTML backup file has a .html file extension and check the type via the properties to avoid issues with hidden file extensions.

ME TOO ;( I also exported bookmarks from Firefox and have tried to import them. and also when I push the open at the bottom in the import dialog box after selecting the html file the box goes away but no bookmarks are imported. for a short time there is the spinning blue disk that disappears, but still no bookmarks ;(

Anyone have a solution for this?

I am using win8 and FF20. I have even reinstalled FF , and I also found a .json backup, but still all I get is a spinning blue disk that disappears, and still no bookmarks ;(

AND YES it is a .HTML.. I have done this many times without any probs. I am baffled!

Thanks,

Rod

Hi awesome1, if you have a .json backup from your previous Firefox, that probably would restore well. However, if it's just the HTML, as a workaround, can you try importing into IE first, then having Firefox import from IE?
