While opening firefox today it did a update on its own and now the site identity button doesnt do anything other than a grey globe. Is this firefoxs fault or do i need to change something i saw some other people have had this problem. Also can i still surt the web in Firefox while the sites have grey globes with risk of privacy issues

The gray globe indicates a standard HTTP connection. Your traffic to and from the site is not encrypted by Firefox.

On this site, you should see a gray lock icon. Are you not getting that?

You may be wondering what happened to the site's favicon. It now is displayed on the tab. If you only have one page open and you don't show the tab bar when there is only one page, then you won't see it. (Related thread w/o solution yet: How to show favicons in the address bar?)

no its giving me the globe for every site

Do you have any add-ons that could affect that part of the address bar? For example, there used to be one that displayed a padlock there for secure sites. A standard diagnostic for add-on issues is to try Firefox's Safe Mode.

First, I recommend backing up your Firefox settings in case something goes wrong. See Back up and restore information in Firefox profiles. (You can copy your entire Firefox profile folder somewhere outside of the Mozilla folder.)

Next, restart Firefox in Firefox's Safe Mode (Diagnose Firefox issues using Troubleshoot Mode) using

Help > Restart with Add-ons Disabled

In the Safe Mode dialog, do not check any boxes, just click "Continue in Safe Mode."

If the site identify button starts working correctly, this points to one of your add-ons (or maybe a custom setting?) as the problem.

You can also check if there is an userChrome.css file present.

The customization files userChrome.css (interface) and userContent.css (websites) are located in the chrome folder in the user profile folder.

You can use this button to go to the Firefox profile folder:

  • Help > Troubleshooting Information > Profile Directory: Open Containing Folder

Apparently, this was a deliberate change rolled out with the last updates!

http://blog.mozilla.org/ux/2012/06/site-identity-ui-updates/

It cost our shop many man-hours of work because it occurred simultaneously with a virus infection on one machine. We thought that others were infected also because of the 'sudden strange behavior' of firefox on the infected machine as well as the other machines! Also added to the confusion stew was another machine showing no 'mottled grey ball' problem.
