r31b3n 1 year ago Hi, some solutions:
- you can just wait an update for Java.
- you can install "Add-on Compatibility Reporter" by Mozilla
https://addons.mozilla.org/fr/firefox/addon/add-on-compatibility-reporter/?src=api
"After installing the Add-on Compatibility Reporter, your incompatible extensions will become enabled for you to test..." "Note: Recommended for alpha and beta users only!"
I'm using it for "Java" and "deskCut". Unfortunatly, it will be usefull for frequent news firefox versions.
(Sorry for my english... but much better than my spanish xD)

mbrubeck 1 year ago The "Java Console" add-on is only needed if you are a programmer writing Java code that runs in Firefox. Otherwise, this add-on is not useful. Disabling it will not affect web pages that use Java.

Exasperated 1 year ago All this geekspeak! After three wasted days of trying to get access to my broker's trading platform, or my data supplier's streaming application, after repeatedly installing the latest versions of Firefox and Java, after repeatedly clearing my cache, I finally found a diagnostic tool that told me I needed a Java plugin. It didn't tell me what plugin, or where to get it, just that I needed it!
Then I found another diagnostic tool that told me I do have the Java plugin.
Then I came to this website and by accident stumbled on the fact that FIREFOX 6 DISABLES JAVA! #@%#&!! Did it occur to ANYONE to test this before releasing it?
And, contrary to comments further up this page, some websites DO need Java! (Or a Java plugin, or the Java console - what's the difference? Geekspeak hairsplitting aside, SOMETHING still isn't working.) The two sites I can't get access to, for starters. As of half an hour ago they still weren't working.
So, is there a solution? If not, when will one be available? Until then, will installing Firefox 5 get me out of trouble? Is Firefox 5 still available? (Rhetorical question - I'll go looking for it. With any luck I will find it somewhere.) My livelihood depends on restoring access to these two websites. Headache tablets, anyone?

I installed Firefox 5.0 and ran all the diagnostics. Everything came up clear - but STILL no access to my broker and still no streaming data.

lmacri 1 year ago It might be necessary to first download the free Revo Uninistaller v. 1.93 from http://www.Java revouninstaller.com/revo_uninstaller_free_download.html (not the 2.5.3 Pro version) and then use Revo to uninstall your current Java installation. There is a Safe, Moderate and Advanced mode in Revo Uninstaller - use the Advanced mode to clean all residual Java registry entries and files.
Then re-boot and download and install Java v. 7.00 JRE. FileHippo has both the 32-bit and 64-bit versions on their site. Oracle is still recommending Java 6.26 for general release while Java 7.00 is being tested by developers but most people seem to be using the v. 7.00 JRE without any problems
Hopefully a clean uninstall with Revo and re-installation with Java v. 7.00 will solve the problem.

I agree with some of the comments of other non tech savvy people, if you still have installation software of Ver 5 or 5.01, re-install either Ver 5 or 5.01 until Firefox can resolve the problem.
I think Firefox should withdraw Ver 6 and allow the public download of Ver 5.01 until the Java problem has been resolved.
I am surprised that Firefox allowed the released on Ver 6 with this fault, as this is the first time I have experienced a problem with Firefox software since I first used Ver 1.5.

lmacri 1 year ago I updated to Firefox 6.0 and Java 7.0 (v. 1.7.0.0), and Firefox 6 still disables the Java Console extension on my Vista 32-bit system.
However, the plugins for the Java Deployment Toolkit and Java Platform SE are both enabled and when I test my Java installation with the Java Version Checker, it reports that my Java plug-ins are working normally.
If you still have Java v. 6.26, I would suggest that you test your Java plug-ins with the Java Version Checker, because it may show that your Java plug-ins actually work in Firefox 6.0.
After reading mbrubeck's post above, I'm beginning to wonder if it really affects the average user if the Java Console extension is disabled as long as the plug-ins are working. Perhaps Java auto-updating is affected if the console doesn't work?

YOU should also make sure to read your plugins because firefox notates if they are incompatible so you should use there recommended program and NO the java console does not affect your ability to use java its a developer program as long as your runtime environment plugin is up to date you should be fine.. or be patient.

Did you remember to disable automatic updating for Firefox after re-installing FF5 (Tools | Options | Advanced | Updates)?

-
krisdude 1 year ago Hi leo1962
As mentioned by Imacri, disable the automatic update by going to 'Tools' -> 'Options' -> 'Advance' and select 'Ask what I want to do' option.
Closed Ver 6 and then re-install Ver 5 or 5.01. Doing this, Ver 5 or 5.01 will 'upgrade' the Ver 6.
You will find about 30 minutes later, it will ask you to 'Do you wish to update' - just select 'Ask Me Later'.
I have done this and everything is back to normal.
Just a point to note - every time you restart Firefox you will get 'Do you wish to update' notice and click on the select 'Ask Me Later' icon and Firefox will load normally.
I agree with MizLiz comments -"Nobody should have to sit at their computer and try to be a programmer. We just want the thing to WORK"

lmacri 1 year ago I think the online Firefox Plugin Checker joe_kpunk was referring can be found at http://www.mozilla.com/en-US/plugincheck/. You can also get to this web page from the Firefox Add-on Manager (Tools | Add-ons) by clicking on the "Check to see if your plug-ins are up to date" link.
The Firefox Plugin Checker does not check for updates for browsers extensions such as the currently disabled Java Console extension, so I prefer checking for updates for all add-ons (i.e., both plugins and browser extensions) using the Firefox Add-on Manager (Tools | Add-ons). Just click the Update button (it has an icon that looks like a gear, just to the left of the "Search all add-ons" box) and choose "Check for Updates" from the drop-down list.

However the +sign on the tabs is now gone, I have to double click next to a tab for a new tab to open.

When will FF6 remedy the issue relating to Java?
-
Swapnilrustagi 1 year ago @leo1962,
If Mozilla doesn't do anything about this, then you need to wait 1-2 months for Java 7 Update 1 to correct this. But that would be too late as Firefox 7 stable would have been released by that time (Firefox 7 release date - 27 September).

rgomes 1 year ago Java do work on Firefox6. It may not be working on your box, but it definitely works.
Please follow the instructions below.
These instructions are for Linux platforms, in particular Debian.
If you are a Windows user, please continue reading: the concept is pretty much the same and I will point out what the differences are, so you will be able to do it... I hope. I warn that I don't have Windows installed at home and that I never tested the instructions below on Windows platforms.
Q: Why it is not working?A: The 2 main reasons are: (a) you don't have Java installed and (b) Firefox wasn't able to find the correct Java installation.
Q: How can fix a Firefox installation in order to find Java?A: You basically have to remove one symlink and recreate it, pointing to the correct Java plugin.
Q: What a symlink is and how do I do this?A: A symlink (symbolic link) is basically a file which points to another file. Everytime an application uses a symbolic link, it is actually using the file pointed by the symbolic link.
Q: I've never heard about symbolic links.A: That's probably you are a Windows user. Windows does not have symbolic links. The .lnk files in Windows are not proper symbolic links, technically speaking. So, these .lnk files are not replacement for symbolic links.
Q: If Windows do not have symbolic links, how can I fix Firefox installation?A: You will simply copy the file, instead of recreating the symlink.
OK... let's have our hands dirty on it on now :)
1. Let's find where the Firefox plugins directory is:
$ dpkg -L firefox | fgrep plugins
On Debian, substitute "firefox" by "iceweasel".On Windows, use Windows Explorer to find there Firefox is: Firefox must be under C:\Program Files\Mozilla or maybe C:\Program Files\Firefox. Try them yourself and find where the plugins directory is.
2. Find where your Java installation is:
In my specific case, I installed Java under a location of my preference.
On Linux boxes, in particular Debian, you can discover via:
$ ls -ald /etc/alternatives/java
On Windows, it must be probably under C:\Program Files\java
3. Verify if you have a versioning problem.
Windows users can skip this step.
It turns out that my /etc/alternative/java (a symlink) points to a location which does not exist anymore. It was an old version of Java that I removed by hand and I forgot to update /etc/alternatives/java in order to point to the new location.
When Firefox installs, I suppose (not sure!) that it infers the location of the Java plugin from /etc/alternatives/java.
So, I'm now fixing this.
Note: this is specific to my box! Find whatever is convenient to your box!
$ rm /etc/alternatives/java
$ ln -s /opt/JavaIDE/jdk1.6.0_25-linux-x86_64/bin/java /etc/alternatives/java
4. Fixing Firefox plugin.
a. Go to Firefox plugin folder and remove libnpjp2.so.
Windows users: find something similar to libnpjp2 under the plugins folder and remove it. NOTE: Just in case, take note of this file name, for further reference.
b. Create a symlink to the correct plugin.
We will repeat (more or less) what we have already done in step 3. Note: this example below is valid for my box in particular. Find whatever is convenient in your case:
$ cd /usr/lib/mozilla/plugins$ rm libnpjp2.so
$ ln -s /opt/JavaIDE/jdk1.6.0_25-linux-x86_64/jre/lib/amd64/libnpjp2.so
Windows users:Copy the libnpjp2.dll (or whatever extension it is) from the Java jre/lib/plugins folder to your Firefox plugins folder.
5. Restart Firefox
Make sure you stop all running instances of Firefox, including all popous and other dialogs which eventually you had opened. Start Firefox again.
6. Check your java installationVisit this think:
http://www.java.com/en/download/testjava.jsp
It should work now.If it tells you you should upgrade... well... it is already working, isn't it?
I hope it helps

lmacri 1 year ago Hi leo1962:
Are you seeing the greyed out extension in the Firefox Add-on Manager (Tools | Add-ons | Extensions), or are you referring to the grey button labeled "? Research" that appears next to certain plugins on the Firefox Plugin Checker on the Mozilla web site? You don't need to be concerned about a grey button on the Plugin Checker web page - it just means that the Mozilla servers do not host updates for these plugins. I have two such plugins (Windows Presentation Foundation and iTunes Application Detector) and updates for these plugins are delivered directly by the manufacturers.
Do you have any extensions besides the Java Console that are greyed out in the Firefox Add-on Manager? If there is no Remove button in the Add-on Manager that usually means that the extension came bundled with a software program and can only be removed by uninstalling the entire software package from the Windows Control Panel. For example, if you have Norton Internet Security 2011 and the Norton Toolbar extension is greyed out in the Firefox Add-on Manager, you must uninstall the entire NIS 2011 program in order to permanently remove (not hide) the toolbar extension from the Firefox browser.
As for the missing "Open a new tab" button, go to View | Toolbars | Customize and click the "Restore Default Set" button or drag the "New Tab" icon next to your existing tabs. It's also possible you accidentally dragged the "+" icon to another toolbar and just need to drag it back where it belongs. If none of this works, go to Tools | Options | Tabs and make sure "Always show the tab bar" is enabled.

lmacri 1 year ago rgomes:
Most users on this thread are now wondering why the Java Console SE extension (Tools | Add-ons | Extensions) is not compatible with Firefox 6.0. The Java browser plugins (Tools | Add-ons | Plugins) still work for most people, and if they visit the link to the Java Installation Checker you mentioned in your post they often find that their Firefox plugins are working normally.
Users will likely find that most, if not all, of their Java-enabled web pages and applications also work correctly even though the Java Console SE extension is currently disabled in Firefox 6.0, as long as the Java browser plugins are currently up-to-date (v. 6.26) and working normally.

leo1962 1 year ago lmacri, +Tab issue fixed thanks.
Greyed out extensions all the previous versions of Java Console, AVG and Zone Alarm.
Either way, I not that tech savvy as rgomes, I rely on Firefox when they issue an upgrade, then one would expect some previous core components such Java should run normally as with previous versions.

I agree with you 100%. I don't know why Mozilla has gone to this rapid release of new versions, but I'm getting really fed up with this constant troubleshooting just to get my add-ons working again. I don't know why they can't give major software companies like Oracle and Symantec more lead time so they can beta-test their extensions properly.

lmacri 1 year ago You can re-enable and test disabled add-ons by installing the Firefox Add-on Compatibility Reporter. I've used this tool before and found that it may be necessary to close and re-start Firefox a few times after installing ACR in order to turn off the add-on compatibility checking in Firefox. Just check your Add-on Manager (Tool | Add-ons) and ACR will tell you if a Firefox re-start is necessary.
The downside of using ACR is that it will re-enable extensions that could be legitimately incompatible with FF6. After you've determined which add-on is causing your problems and/or after FF6-compatible versions of all your add-ons are released, I would advise disabling ACR and letting Firefox's built-in add-on compatibility checking perform its normal function.
Edit: Apologies to r31b3n who first suggested installing the ACR here in this thread back on August 16th. If this suggestion helps you , be sure to give r31b3n the credit.

lmacri 1 year ago Hi goodtyneguy:
If you're certain the disabled Java Console extension is the problem, see the Oracle Support article How Do I Enable and View the Java Console?. This article explains how to open the Java Console if you need to use it. Do your trading charts work correctly when the Java Console is open? If not, then your financial site may require Flash or some other add-on that is not working correctly.
There is also a Java article on the mozilla.org site here that may be of interest. Under the heading Java Console Disabled it states "Note: Starting with Java 6 Update 10, the Java Console menu item in Firefox ("Tools -> Java Console") and SeaMonkey 2 ("Tools -> Web Development -> Java Console") is nonfunctional and no longer opens the Java Console. This is by design."
Have you tried r31b3n`s suggestion of August 16th to install the Firefox Add-on Compatibility Reporter to force the Java Console extension to enable? This is the recommended solution in the Firefox Support article Add-ons are Disabled After Updating.

Imacri:I have windows XP. Using Vista I think you have only to find in the main folder where you have the installed Programs the Mozilla Firefox folder and then the Extension subfolder. There you'll find a sub-subfolder named CAFEEFAC-0016-0000-0026-ABCDEFFEDCBA for Java 6.0.26 version or CAFEEFAC-0017-0000-0000-ABCDEFFEDCBA for Java 7.0 version. That sub-subfolder contains the plugin file Install that you have to edit changing the number of the maxVersion.
P.S.: The Install file is not a XML file! It is a RDF file. So you can open it with a browser, but if you want to edit it you have to use a Text Editor.

lmacri 1 year ago Hi mrag:
According to the article here in the MozillaZine knowledge base, uninstalling Java will remove the Java Console extension but updating over an older version will cause the console extensions to accumulate in Firefox.
I've pasted a paragraph from that article below but there's more information in the article on how to manually delete the old consoles if the instructions below don't work.
Multiple Java Console Extensions
Starting in Firefox 3.6, a "Java Console <version>" extension will appear in the Firefox "Tools -> Add-ons -> Extensions" list for each Java version installed (previous to Firefox 3.6, these extensions were hidden). Uninstalling Java should remove the Java Console. Updating Java 6 Update 10 or later will remove the previous Java version but may not uninstall the Java Console for that version, causing Firefox to accumulate multiple Java Console extensions. You can uninstall all Java Console extensions from the Firefox Extensions list, since this extension is obsolete and has no function (see below). On Windows, if the uninstall button to remove the Java Console extension is "greyed-out" or missing, exit Firefox, reopen Firefox from the context (right-click) menu "Run as Administrator" option, then try again.
I posted instructions in this thread on August 19th (page 1) on how to use the free Revo Uninstaller to clean out remnants of your old Java installations that may be helpful. I follow these general steps every time a new Java version is released.

If you want to remove the older Java Console extensions, you have simply to delete in Programs (or Program files)\Mozilla Firefox\extensions\CAFEEFAC-0016-0000-0026-ABCDEFFEDCBA (for Java 6.0.26 version and the same numbers for the other numbers of the other Java versions) the RDF file named Install.

lmacri 1 year ago Hi noghere:
Thanks for the additional info. I found the install.rdf file for Java 7.00 (v. 1.7.0.0) on my Win Vista 32-bit machine at C:\Program Files\Mozilla Firefox\extensions\{CAFEEFAC-0017-0000-0000-ABCDEFFEDCBA}\install.rdf and was able to view the contents by opening the file in Notepad. Very slick!

noghere 1 year ago Hi Imacri,
Change the number of maxVersion from 5.0+ to 6.0+ using Notepad and you'll have the Java console extension working.

lmacri 1 year ago Hi noghere:
I'm not really worried if the Java Console extension is disabled in FF6, since it doesn't seem to serve any useful purpose in my Firefox browser. I'm happy as long as my Java plugins are working when I test them with the Java Installation Tester.
However, your solution to edit the max Firefox version in the install.rdf file is a good solution for people who want to test to see if the disabled extension is the reason a web page is not displayed correctly, or if they're just annoyed seeing that disabled extension every time they open their Firefox Add-on Manager.

noghere 1 year ago Imacri,
Why don't you try it? It's so simple and you can always come back to the original not working version of the Install file. Before editing make a back_up copy of it if you want. Anyway I think it's better to have the Java console extension working...

eticketuser 1 year ago NICE JOB, Amanda - This was the exact solution I needed! Disabling ALL of my Add-ons and extensions restored Firefox's ability to upload graphics again. In my case, I discovered the problem was with some miscellaneous add-on that I'm certain only a very few people are using. Other add-ons I have that do not seem to be contributing to the problem (of not being able to upload graphics) are: ColorZilla, Ghostery, Google's Advertising Cookie Opt-Out, NoScript and SEO Quake.

antzpantz_4011 1 year ago i have tried all suggestion and still have this problem . would really like it to be fixed. all games on facebook are not working and it only been like that since this update. my netbook which i didnt update works fine still so its not a facebook game problem.

lmacri 1 year ago Hi antzpantz:
The thread titled Certain Games on Facebook No Longer Work Since Installing FF6 has some good troubleshooting tips. The user in that thread solved their problem by creating a new Firefox profile and then transferring their old bookmarks and passwords into the new profile.
This won't enable the disabled Java Console but it may fix a problem with another Firefox add-on that isn't working correctly in Facebook.

Straggler 1 year ago I found the only way to get Firefox working properly again was to create a new profile. I tried cleaning up my old profile but never made any progress. Transferred bookmarks to new profile. Use LastPass for passwords so that was easy. Had to re-install all add-ons which was a pain but everything now works again as it should. Also, Java Console is not needed unless you are a developer.
Mozilla should have emphasized this as the best solution.

tmflorio 1 year ago this seems to have effected the plugin up date page also ...
Ever since 6.0.2. Plugins will not update.
Check begins then crashes.. seems like a java problem.
-
lmacri 1 year ago Hi tmflorio:
I haven't updated to FF 6.0.2 yet, but the Java Installation Checker at http://www.java.com/en/download/testjava.jsp should tell you if your Java installation is working and whether you have the current recommended version (now Java 6 Update 27).
If the Java Installation Checker reports that your Java browser plugins are working correctly and up-to-date and both the Java Deployment Toolkit and Java Platform SE plugins are enabled in your Firefox Add-on Manager (Tools | Add-ons | Plugins), then something else is probably preventing your plugins from updating.
The Java Console extension is disabled in FF 6 by design and should not affect plugin updates.

lmacri 1 year ago antzpantz_4011 / tmflorio:
This posts is only relevant if you have Norton Internet Security or some other Norton product (e.g., Norton Anti-Virus, Norton Online Family) installed on your PC.
This is a bit of a long shot, but there are reports starting to appear on the Norton forum that Java games, etc., don't work with the newly released NIS 2012 and the 32-bit IE9 browser, even though Java works correctly with the 64-bit IE9 browser. They suspect that the Norton Toolbar or Symantec IPS extension is the problem, since the 64-bit IE9 browser does not have these Norton extensions (see one example in the NIS/NAV forum here).
Since NIS 2012 also installs a similar Norton Toolbar and Symantec IPS extension in Firefox (Tools | Add-ons | Extensions), I'm beginning to wonder if the new 2012 version of NIS/NAV is causing a problem with Java for some people. There are even suspicions that the parental controls in NIS 2012 or Norton Online Family could be blocking Java on the Internet.

stepelnbk 1 year ago It seems hard for some people to believe, but some people need Java Console to run some of Firefox' extensions; for instance Recipefox. Now I know that's not a must for most people, but it's the reason I got Firefox and I used it frequently. I'm going back to v3-whatever until Firefox has an upgrade that allows Java Console to work...that is unless someone has an idea how to get Recipefox to work now? Anyone? Anyone?
-
lmacri 1 year ago Hi stepelnbk:
Do you have the latest version of RecipeFox v. 0.59? I believe you need this version if you're using FF6.
When you run the Java Installation Checker , does it detect the currently recommended Java 6 Update 27 on your machine? I've seen some reports that RecipeFox isn't compatible yet with Java 7 (v. 1.7.0.0) .
You may also be able to find some help on the RecipeFox forum. There is a post on the forum here that indicates that RecipeFox 0.59 should work with FF6 and Java 6.27.

Well, I finally found a solution...
It is simple, easy to implement, non-geeky, crude, archaic, made-for-idiots - BUT IT WORKS!
I installed Internet Explorer 6.0
Instant, trouble-free, successful solution.

tbfiii 1 year ago I'm tired of all these updates that screw everything else up. Shouldn't have released this without making sure that it was compatible. Mozilla needs to provide the fix because I'm not goin through all the crap listed here as solutions and I'm not going to put up with the browser crashing all the time.
-
jmouse888 1 year ago I don't think this should be counted as a "solution" since it does not actually solve the problem.
