Use themes to change the look of Firefox

Firefox Firefox Last updated: 2 days ago

A theme is a type of Firefox add-on that changes the visual appearance of Firefox. This article describes how to find, install and manage themes in Firefox.

What are themes?

A theme changes the appearance of Firefox, such as the color scheme and background image of the toolbars. The color scheme of menus and built-in pages will follow, based on whether the text color on your toolbar is light or dark. Some websites also will follow the same color scheme. Choosing a theme

Firefox comes with a set of themes to choose between, that support both light and dark modes. You can also install themes created by our community members through add-ons.

Note: All themes are lightweight (background) themes. Complete themes are no longer supported. See Built-in themes in Firefox - alternative to complete themes.

Select a website theme in Firefox settings

You can select from Light, Dark or System appearance for websites in Firefox settings. If you’re using a Firefox Theme, this will toggle the light versus dark version of that theme. It will also change the color scheme of menus and built-in pages. To learn more, see Change website appearance settings in Firefox.

The System setting will match what your Operating System is set to (light or dark), so if it automatically switches to dark with certain lighting, then Firefox will update as well.

Select a theme from the New Tab customization panel

You can view a selection of Firefox themes in the customization panel of the Firefox Home / New Tab page.

  1. Open up a new window or tab.
  2. Click the customize button Fx141NewTabCustomizeIcon in the bottom right corner of the New Tab page.
  3. Under Appearance, select a theme or click See more themes
  4. Select Explore more themes for a snapshot of Firefox themes.

Note: If you simply want to change the color scheme, Colorways by Firefox is a collection of themes you can choose from.

You can also install Mozilla's Firefox Color extension to change the color of tabs and toolbars, add a custom background, and more. See the Firefox Color Homepage for details.
